The government on Monday approved a proposal on procurement of equipment and services for building infrastructure to bring all the departments and agencies under e-governance.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase at a meeting held at the Cabinet Division with Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury in the chair approved a single bidder's proposal.

The tender proposal is titled 'Supply, installation, testing and commissioning of public network to connect government entity and provide application services on turnkey basis' which is being implemented under the project styled `Development of National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government (Bangla.gov.net).

Additional Secretary to Cabinet Nurul Karim said the government selected South Korea-based SK C&C Company Ltd as the consultant firm for the project. The firm would be paid $ 22.32 million (Tk 1.82 billion) for proving consultancy service.

"The implementation of the project will start within a month," he said.

The project aims to build the infrastructure needed to improve IT literacy of the officials and employees under all ministries and help develop skilled manpower in Bangladesh, he added.

He said the project would also help reduce corruption in government entities and facilitate inter-connectivity in all ministries and will specially focus on the e-governance system.

The cabinet committee also approved six other tender proposals, including two of the state-owned Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to import 200,000 metric tonnes of urea fertiliser.

As per the proposals, 100,000 metric tonnes of packed granular urea fertiliser will be imported from China through the Chittagong port while another 100,000 tonnes will be imported through the Mongla port.

Four suppliers will ship 100,000 metric tonnes fertilizer through Chittagong port at a cost of Tk 3.69 billion while other four will supply another 100,000 metric tonnes through Mongla port at a total cost of Tk 3.73 billion.

The meeting approved another proposal to build a 20-storey building for Dhaka Zila Parishad (district council) demolishing the old one in the old part of Dhaka city.

The Local Government Division placed the proposal to the Cabinet body to award the construction work to the lone bidder --DPZ Tower-- at a contract value of Tk 1.6 billion.

Another proposal for the Dhaka WASA's rehabilitation project for water distribution network in the city's Manikdi, Baruntek, Bhasantek, Mirpur Section-11, 12, 13, 14, Kachukhet, Ibrahimpur, Kafrul and Mirpur Rokeya Sarani area also got nod of the cabinet body. The Cobra Tadagua-JV got the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded project at a contract value of Tk 194.7million.

The Railway Ministry's Iswardi to Dhalachar via Pabna rail track construction work and ICT Ministry's connection network project also approved by the cabinet body.
