Finance Minister AMA Muhith believes access to information technology can help beat corruption in sectors like land management, police and judiciary.

"Corruption still persists in the society. Information technology can be effectively used for reducing corruption," said Muhith, while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of BCS ICT World-12, a computer fair organised by Bangladesh Computer Samity on Tuesday.

He said that prevailing corruption in land management, police and courts can be handled effectively by use of Information-technology, because that ensured transparency.

Muhith said allocation for the IT sector in the budget has been increased and the government has successfully reduced internet usage cost, introduced e-tendering and taken information-technology service to the doorsteps of those living in the villages.

Muhith also revealed a government plan for setting up an ICT University at Gazipur for building skilled manpower.

He regretted for the delay in upgrading the country to 3-G technology, but blamed cell phone companies for the delay.

Muhith said connection with the second submarine cables has been established to ensure a fast internet service.

The computer fair will continue for five days at Bangabandhu International Conference centre at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

BCS Director Mostafa Zabbar , in his inaugural speech, prioritised using information-technology in the land sector to avoid huge losses the government was now suffering.
