The government has taken a fresh move to establish e-governance in its routine functions aiming to reduce operational costs and also make the functions more transparent and smooth.

The latest move will also serve as a tool to enhance productivity and improve the quality of government services.

The Government of Bangladesh has embarked on a program of economic reforms to enhance government effectiveness and improve service delivery, and will receive support through a US$20 million grant approved today by the World Bank.

Public-private partnership is expected to help develop sustainable and strategic planning for eGovernance.

THE growing use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) through the assistance of informatics can help improve the quality of government services. It can also help institutionalise management systems that reduce the scope for rent-seeking activities.

The Hajj website of the Bangladesh government has proved to be a financially sustainable model.

"The operational costs of the website launched in 2002 are being collected through a small fee from individual pilgrims," Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), a private think tank, said in its study of E-government in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), a private think-tank, has recommended allowing revenue budget for recruitment of ICT human resources in government offices.

"It is important to recruit ICT (information and communication technology) human resources through the revenue budget to ensure the sustainability of eGovernment projects, many of which are launched under the development budget through financial assistance from donor agencies," the BEI said in a recent study of eGovernment in Bangladesh.
