Over 60 government ministries, departments and agencies have taken part in the e – government excellence exhibition organized by National Information Technology Authority (NITA) in collaboration with Huawei technologies.

A 2-day fair that began this morning is taking place at Garden City Roof Top and the general public is invited to attend.

As one way of deepening service delivery, government agencies offering online services are set to be recognized at the preliminary NITA e-government excellence awards.

Arnold Mangeni the Director of information security at National Technology Authority (NITA-U) says this event intends to create awareness about services offered.

Over 45 government agencies have already put information online and according to NITA most foreigners coming to Uganda were now using the portal to apply for Visa and work permits.

National Information Technology Authority (NITA) has called on the public to utilize government services online giving assurance of data safety.

The director E-Government services, Peter Kahiigi, said some citizens were being held back by the concerns about the safety of their personal data before seeking services online.

Speaking to James Saaka, the Executive Director, NITA-U, the new Computer laboratory will enable students benefit from E-learning services installed by NITA Uganda in partnership with UNICEF. Among the services installed include Kolibri, an educational software that provides world class content for students, plus examination simulators for a smooth learning curve of all students at Ongongoja Secondary School. Other than providing cheap and affordable internet to all government institutions, the National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U) has embarked on extending E-learning services especially to rural schools to foster academic excellence.

The government of Uganda has launched the fourth phase of the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure and e-Government Infrastructure Project (NBI/EGI). President Yoweri Museveni performed the launch ceremony.

Construction works on this phase included extension of an ICT backbone to the West Nile districts of Pakwach, Nebbi, Arua, Yumbe, Koboko, Adjumani, Katakwi and Moroto. There was also connection of the ICT backbone to three border points which are Oraba of Uganda, Vurra of South Sudan and Mpondwe of DR Congo for regional connectivity and to enhance the redundancy of the NBI.
