At the end of every financial year, public entities return billions of shillings to the treasury after failing to spend what was allocated to them in the national budget.

Such government ministries, departments and local governments blame the failure of absorption of such monies on a lengthy procurement process.

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has joined the Uganda Law Society to curb ICT-related crime.

Speaking during a communications conference that took place in Kampala recently state minister for ICT, Nyombi Thembo asked the law fraternity to offer up some solutions.

He said Uganda is currently facing enormous ICT challenges given the fast pace at which the industry is evolving. He cited public policy, regulation, legislation, internet freedom, and intellectual property rights issues as areas that needed attention.

Uganda expects to create employment opportunities for three million people in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector by 2020.

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, John Nasasira, said in addition to employment opportunities, government revenue was expected to increase to sh600b annually.

He said what is needed now is providing support and an enabling environment to spur growth in the sector.

The health ministry is investing in electronic systems to help curb the outbreak of infectious diseases such as Marburg, Ebola and other chronic illnesses among others.

This is being done by setting up such structures as the East African Diseases Outbreak Surveillance system.

The system will be able to alert the ministry of any outbreaks in the Country.

Government is set to reduce costs by at least 80%, for Ugandans to access Internet easily, the Minister of Information Communication and Technology (ICT), John Nasasira, has said.

Speaking during the inauguration of the new board of directors of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) at the ministry’s offices in Kampala, he said discussions were underway with operators of Internet to get submarine cables at the Indian Ocean coast to avoid middlemen who hike prices.
