Ho Chi Minh City is implementing an e-government promotional effort using a US$130,000 credit provided by the Asia Foundation.

Vietnam is looking toward an e-government- a mechanism which will provide the population with information from Government agencies and public administrative services via the Internet. To date the Government has yet to approve a roadmap for the development of an e-government. Projects like a masterplan, coded 112, on the application of information technology in State administrative management is one of the major objectives at which the Government is looking.

Government staff who work in the information technology field should receive a title, rank and grade, an official from the Ministry of the Interior said on Thursday.

"IT is now used in many fields in Viet Nam. The computerisation of administration and e-government will raise the role of IT officers, and their roles need to be defined," Nguyen Ngoc Oanh, a senior official with the Ministry of the Interior, said.

The fourth round-table conference, part of a series of multi-sided workshops “Preparing the way for information technology (IT) and telecommunication development” was opened yesterday morning.

The conference is discussing issues for completing the “national strategy on IT and telecommunication development by 2010".

Government officials in Vietnam are reconsidering their e-government programme

In an echo of the UK's emphasis on using IT to redesign public services, they are calling for a greater emphasis on social and economic issues rather than just improving administration.
