The Government this year plans to spend VND15 billion (US$940,000) to purchase equipment for online meetings with leading officials.

More meetings among government officials will be conducted online via TelePresence technology, following the success of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s recent online discussion.

The government is making great strides in administrative reform by cranking up technology applications setting an exemplary model for state agencies at lower levels.

The central government has been publicizing all issued directives, apart from classified ones, on the website www.chinhphu.vn.

The move has been hailed by individuals from all quarters for setting a good standard and contributing to a national administrative shakeup.

The Ministry of Information and Communications on March 20 collected suggestions of international IT companies for the development of e-government in Vietnam to 2010 and directions to 2020.

The Ministry’s consultative meeting on e-government development held in Hanoi on March 20 drew representatives of many multinational groups like Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, IBM, Oracle, Sun, Nec, KT, Samsung and some international organisations such as the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) and the World Bank.

Viet Nam will launch the national satellite VINASAT-1 on the morning of April 12 at a cost of more than US$200 million, bringing countless benefits to farmers and other Vietnamese living in remote and isolated areas.

"This may be good news for us," says farmer Tran Van Tinh of Thuong Tin District, Ha Tay Province.

"When my village, Hien Giang, gets internet access, I’ll be able to get information the same way that anyone in France or the US who has access to the internet can," he says happily.

The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), on March 5, organized a conference seeking advice from IT leading experts for the development of e-government.

Vietnam’s top IT experts attended the event. Among them were famous names, such as Prof. Dang Huu, former Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Dr. Mai Liem Truc, Prof. Chu Hao, Dr. Do Xuan Tho (Chairman of the Vietnam Information Processing Association), PhD. Bach Hung Khang, and Pham Thien Nghe (Secretary General of the HCM City Computer Association).
