The Chairman, Cubana Group, Obinna Iyiegbu, has said the firm plans to develop a new smart city project in Abuja to bridge the housing gap in the country.

He said the new project would employ youths through direct means and engage professional architects, engineers and other consultants through an open engagement process.

MTN Nigeria has finally turned on its 5G mobile connection services in 190 sites across West Africa including Nigeria. Since its rollout, mobile users have been reporting internet speeds greater than 1.4 GB per second.

The National Communication Commission was the one to announce that 5G will be available in the country on August 24 after preparing with the Federal Government for almost three years. It’s known that South Africa already has 5G since 2019 with Rain, so this was already due for a few years now in the Western part of the continent.

Aligning itself with global trends, where nations are introducing and implementing smart technologies for sustainable national development, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), the umbrella body for all Information Technology (IT) professionals, has stressed the need for the development of smart, secure and sustainable Nigeria, using emerging technologies.

While Lagos, a home to over 22 million people, is a destination for many Nigerians who crave for the pursuit of happiness because of its cosmopolitan nature and business friendly environment, the increase in population has begun to have a toll on planning, infrastructure, environment and the people.

For instance, housing, lands, transportation, healthcare challenges, air pollution, as well as flooding have continued to threaten the mega-city status the state is known for, hence prompting the state government to push for a change in status from the mega-city it is known for into a smart-city.

Information Technology (IT) stakeholders in the country have stressed the need for ubiquitous data generation and processing that will help in decision making and policy implementation for the attainment of a smart, secure and sustainable Nigeria.

They stated this at the ongoing 2022 International Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
