The Ministry of Economy has awarded etisalat a Dh6 million contract to implement e-Government services for its internal operations and public services.

The move is part of a wider framework of a federal plan fully adopt e-Government. Other establishments in the country are already on board.

A recently launched electronic integration system will transfer personal details of the UAE’s expatriate population from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Labour, and vice-versa.

According to the system, the MoH will make a fingerprint database of all UAE expatriates who have applied for a medical fitness certificate or health card. These fingerprints and the Medical Fitness results will be sent to the MoL’s database, which is needed while applying for a labour permit.

Passengers using public transport facilities will be able to buy e-tickets in the near future.

The e-tickets will be available for travel on public transport buses, the forthcoming Dubai Metro and water taxis.

The UAE Ministry of Performance Development for Government Departments and ICDL GCC Foundation, the governing body and the certification authority of the International Computer Driving License program in the Gulf States, has signed today (Tuesday 3 October 2006) an agreement to implement the ICDL program across all federal government ministries and departments.

The move constitutes the largest scale initiative taken by the UAE federal government so far to achieve its goal of ushering in a 'Digital UAE'.

According to the study by Rutgers University, New Jersey, Dubai’s key Information and Communication Technology (ICT) indicators, particularly its mobile phone density and internet penetration, are comparable to those of key cities in the most developed countries. Dubai’s mobile pentration rate is higher than the average mobile penetration rate in Western Europe, which varies between 80% and 82%.

While the free zones in Dubai are expected to create 150,000 new jobs during the next 3 years, Dubai International Financial Center, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City together are expected to create additional 135,000 new jobs.
