A radical project to transform the UAE's federal ministries into a "Government of Excellence" will be launched shortly, a top official told Gulf News.

The plan, in line with similar projects implemented in several developed countries, will take two years, Sultan Al Mansouri, Minister of Governmental Sector Development, said in an exclusive interview.

When Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri was appointed Minister of Communication in 2004 he said he was keen to continue the pace of progress that had been achieved by the former minister of communication, Ahmad Humaid Al Tayer, adding that the priority of his ministry was to establish a database to determine future needs.

About 15 months after making the statement, the Ministry of Communication was abolished and Al Mansouri was given a new portfolio, the Ministry of Governmental Sector Development.

Transactions worth Dh12.5 million were carried out through Dubai eGovernment's ePay, with 62 per cent of successful transactions made using credit cards and 38 per cent using eDirham cards in 2005, according to an official of Dubai eGovernment.

ePay, the electronic payment system developed by DEG, now enables online payment of public utilities and fines using MasterCard and AMEX (American Express) credit cards. ePay already facilitates online payment via Visa and eDirham cards, announced Dubai eGovernment (DEG).
