The Rise of Smart Cities: How Tech is Rewriting Urban Living
Smart cities are revolutionizing daily life with tech like predictive traffic lights and leak-detecting water systems. While they promise faster, cleaner living, concerns about privacy and tech accessibility still need addressing.
Imagine hitting every green light on your way to work. No unnecessary stops. No honking. Just smooth sailing. That’s not luck — it’s a smart city at work.
Smart cities aren’t just stuffed with shiny gadgets. They’re live, breathing systems that see problems before they happen. Think of it like a chess master planning 10 moves ahead. Using IoT (Internet of Things), AI, and real-time data, these cities aim to make daily annoyances—like traffic jams, missed trash pickups, and random power outages—less of a headache.

How Smart Cities are Bridging the Digital Divide With AI
Urban populations are expected to account for 68% of the global population, putting unprecedented strain on cities’ infrastructure. This rapid urbanisation is exposing critical gaps that compromise residents’ quality of life, from inefficient essential services to grid and water-management deficiencies. The implications are particularly profound for underserved communities, where infrastructure and basic services may already be lacking. Municipal leaders, policymakers, and sustainability directors are now grappling with the challenge of ensuring their cities evolve in a way that is both technologically advanced and equitable and inclusive.
Connectivity is at the heart of this challenge. In the United States alone, an estimated 14.5 million people still lack access to reliable broadband, creating vast “broadband deserts” that exacerbate social and economic divides. These areas, often rural or underserved urban communities, are left behind in a digital age where access to high-speed internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This issue transcends technology—it strikes at the core of equity and social justice. It’s also one of the key reasons programs like BEAD have garnered so much attention, including amongAI experts developing connectivity solutions. Ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their geographic location, have access to healthcare, education, and other critical connected services is vital for fostering inclusive rural and urban growth.

From the rise to the consolidation of smart cities
Smart cities are here to stay. What was considered a big trend a few years ago is now an established topic and a reality for many citizens.
Today we have world rankings, thematic indexes, certifying and specialised companies, cases and, above all, the interest of the public sector and society in advancing this agenda.
The aim of this article is to give a brief overview of the subject and to understand how far we have come and where we are going. A journey through the most impressive Smart Cities initiatives on the planet and their impact on society. The starting point is a simple question:

Here’s How ‘Smart Cities’ Focus On Resilience And Growth No Matter Who’s President In The U.S.
When we step back from high emotions—in either direction—after the U.S. election last week, we see millions of extraordinary people doing yeoman’s work to make our lives, cities, and communities better and more resilient. Hundreds of ways they are doing so were on vivid display at the Smart Cities Expo World Congress 2024 last week in Barcelona, Spain which I had the privilege of exploring. People from across the globe who share a fervent desire to make our cities run more efficiently, serve more residents more effectively and be more resilient – that is, to make them “smarter” — gathered and displayed their solutions.
It's a living reminder that clever, determined, creative people will always use their imagination, resources, networks and elbow grease to find a way to solve every day challenges both large and small. Most of the people I talked to at the Expo – from the Netherlands, to Cyprus and Singapore, from Europe to the Middle East, and fellow Americans – are quick to say their work continues no matter who sits in the White House.

IN: Urban sustainability: Green infrastructure and smart cities
As urban areas in India rapidly expand, the need for sustainable development becomes increasingly critical. By 2050, it is estimated that nearly 68% of the global population will reside in cities, putting immense pressure on infrastructure, resources, and the environment. In India, where cities are experiencing unprecedented growth and transformation, this urgency is amplified. Urbanization is not just changing the physical landscape; it is reshaping the social, economic, and environmental aspects of urban life.
India’s urban population is projected to reach nearly 600 million by 2030, putting immense pressure on key resources such as housing, transportation, water, and energy. To address this growing challenge, the country is prioritizing sustainable urban development to minimize environmental impact and improve the quality of life in cities. The integration of green infrastructure, advanced technologies, and efficient urban planning is seen as a critical solution for creating sustainable, resilient, and liveable urban environments. Initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission are core to this strategy, aiming to modernize urban infrastructure using sustainable practices.

While the launch of e-buses was seen as a progressive step for the city, the current fleet remains insufficient to cater to the growing commuters’ demand. With only 100 electric buses in operation, the shortage has led to overcrowding and longer waiting time for passengers, particularly during peak hours at various routes.
Although the surface transport ministry plans to add another 100 buses by January or February next year, the total fleet will still fall short of the city’s needs. To fully meet the demand, the service requires around 600 e-buses, SSCL official said.

US: The Future of Smart City Technology in North Carolina
Around the world, cities are becoming “smarter” by using advanced technologies to create more efficient, sustainable, and enjoyable communities. North Carolina is also embracing this trend by bringing smart technology to its urban areas. But what does a “smart city” really mean, and how will these technologies shape North Carolina’s future? Let’s look at how smart city projects are transforming the state.
What is a Smart City?
A smart city uses technology and data to improve life for the people who live there. It’s like giving the city a “brain” that connects and monitors things like traffic, energy, and waste. For example, smart traffic lights can adjust based on real-time conditions to help reduce traffic jams. Buildings might save energy through sensors that turn off lights in empty rooms, and waste systems can even track trash levels to schedule pick-ups only when needed.

Mapmaking company TomTom named New York City; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; Boston and Chicago as the top five most congested cities in 2023. Drivers in these large cities each lost anywhere from 72 hours to over 100 hours per year in rush-hour traffic.

- In: government2020-Blog

- In: government2020-Blog

1.3 Veranstaltungen/Vorträge des IfG.CC / IfG.CC events and lectures
=========================================================================
V.1 Genf, Schweiz, 13-14.05., World Summit of the Information Society Forum 2010: Vortrag zum Thema "eGovernment – Does it Work in Developing Countries"
Vom 13. bis zum 14.05.2010 fand in Genf im Rahmen des 2010 World Summit of the Information Society Forum (WSIS Forum) ein Expert Group Meeting (EGM) zum Thema "Citizen and Ministry Capacity Building for E-government in Developing Countries - An Economic Imperative" statt, das vom IfG.CC mit organisiert wurde. In Zusammenarbeit mit der United Nations Division for Public Administration and Development Management hielt Prof. Dr. Tino Schuppan, wissenschaftlicher Direktor des IfG.CC, einen Auftraktvortrag zum Thema "eGovernment – Does it Work in Developing Countries?".

2. Schwerpunktthema des Monats: eGovernment in Brunei Darussalam
=========================================================================

2.1 Brunei: e-Government Survey
The response received in the e-Government Citizen Survey shows an average of 64 percent of the Brunei Darussalam citizens spend more than 5 hours 'online' a week. Aside from that, 85 percent of the respondents can access the internet from home, mobile phones and workplace. The survey is an initiative of the Prime Minister's Office through the e-Government National Centre, to involve the public in carrying out the e-government programme in the country.
The prizes and certificates were presented by the Acting Director of the e-Government National Centre, Hajah Mariah binti Haji Mohamad Taha. A total of 1 thousand 456 participants were eligible for the lucky draw.

Sanjiv Mind, who delivered the keynote speech during the opening of the International Conference on e-Government and Administrative Simplification, said governments had tendencies to focus more on introducing ICT infrastructure in all aspects of government.

2.5 Brunei Urged To Focus On ICT Service Sector
Foreign e-government experts called on Brunei to explore developing Islamic ICT services, a market segment where it could become a leader.
Likewise, Brunei was urged to develop its ICT service sector to be globally competitive rather than expanding ICT manufacturing as an industry due to the country's small size and limited manpower. The issue was raised during the final day of the International Conference on e-Government and Administrative Simplification, when the participants discussed ICT as the new engine of growth for the next generation.

2.6 Brunei: Performance Management Key To E-Govt Projects Success
Performance management could mean the difference to the success of an e-government project, as it assesses a project from start to finish on its effectiveness and its relevancy to the nature of the organisation implementing the project, a senior official from Korea's National Information Society Agency (NIA) said.
Dr Cheung-Moon Cho, executive principal of NIA's Global Planning and Consulting Department said that e-governance needed more than just evaluation of the outcomes of a project. He said that performance management had to be carried out, from even before a project is introduced.

And the Health and Human Services Department is setting up telehealth pilot and innovation programs that were established by Obama administration's health care reform legislation.
FCC’s broadband strategy, published in March, emphasized telehealth/telemedicine and mobile health services, which it refers to as e-care. The strategy calls for expanded federal reimbursements and removing barriers to adoption by updating regulations for device approval, credentialing, privileging and licensing.

6.6 From Delhi, Indians to teach students in Africa
Just like a typical classroom scene, a professor will deliver a lecture and students will raise their hands to ask questions. Only here, the teacher will be at the Delhi University (DU) campus while the students will be in Africa.
As part of the Pan-African e-network project between India and Africa that was launched last year, DU will start conducting these unique tele-education classes for students of the African Union from July this year.
AK Bakshi of the Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL) said: "Initially, the subjects that will be taught through this medium will be two - accountancy and English - but gradually more subjects will be brought into the loop."

7.1 03.06.2010: San Julians, Malta: International Conference and online discussions on e-Diplomacy
An increasing number of diplomatic services use Web 2.0 tools. Some have established virtual embassies. Significantly, the Internet has opened up two-way channels of communication, providing a tool for individuals and organisations worldwide to influence global policy.
Through the Internet, the voice of individuals, marginalised groups and countries can bypass the maze of political representation and be heard globally. For example, the blogs maintained by some non-governmental organisations are more influential than official diplomatic démarches. These processes and developments, which can be referred to collectively as 'e-Diplomacy', substantially influence and will certainly continue to influence the way international relations are conducted.
