Philadelphia ranked in the top 10 of the smartest cities in the nation, for its smart tech and sustainability efforts.

A new study ranking the smartest cities in the United States has Philadelphia ranked at number 10, according to Andreea Neculae for CoworkingCafe.

The rankings were heavily determined by how each city is doing in terms of technology-driven urban development. It uses 13 key metrics, which are then categorized in three weighted groups: Smart Infrastructure and Connectivity, Sustainability and Green Initiatives, and Tech Job Market.

The study praises Philadelphia as one of America’s pioneers in smart tech and sustainability. Philly especially excels in its percentage of electric/hybrid public transportation vehicles. With 78.2 percent of its public transport being green, it lands Philly fourth overall in this particular metric.

The city is also home to 58 coworking spaces and 75 free Wi-Fi hotspots, with a strong zero-waste program.

AI innovation is also strong in Philly, as it supports the development of cutting-edge technologies through 12 AI companies.

“The city also has a solid EV infrastructure, transportation connectivity and strong broadband speed infrastructure, making it a leader in smart city planning,” the report states.

It also praises the local government for investing in smart lighting, traffic management systems, and digital services enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

According to the report, the smartest U.S. city is San Francisco.
