In an effort to align public education with international standards, government and private institutions in the Kingdom are turning to the increased integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in schools.

Leading IT companies like Intel, Google, Apple, Microsoft and others actively support the government and are pursuing initiatives aimed at strengthening the spread, access and utilization of technology in the education sector in the Kingdom. This also includes equipping teachers and students with the necessary skills to adapt to new learning techniques.

Belgian Ambassador Marc Vinck said Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah is expected to leave for Belgium in September for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on e-health partnership with his Belgian counterpart Laurette Onkelinx.

"Dr. Al-Rabeeh was extended an invitation to visit Belgium when Crown Prince Philippe came to the Kingdom in October 2009 as part of a Belgian economic mission. He and Al-Rabeeah discussed ways of improving bilateral agreement in the health sector and it was decided that this could be done through an MoU," Vinck told Arab News in an interview over the weekend.

Saudi Arabia has joined Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates in the elite club of 21 nations holding crucial components of e-readiness for effective e-government and various e-services in public and private sectors, according to U.N. study released in Riyadh on Thursday.

“The presence of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain appearing in the top 21 rank is a feat,” according to the U.N. e-government survey

The Saudi Arabian Government's Holy Makkah Municipality (HMM) has been recognised with a 2012 "Honorary Recognition Award" by the international IT architecture firm iCMG for its new e-Government initiatives.

Omnix International, a leading IT solutions provider, partnered with international IT solution provider Oracle corporation to provide a best-in-class e-Government solution for HMM's municipal operations, which employs more than 3000 professionals.

The drive toward e-governance for Saudi Arabia, which is now benefiting both public and private sectors alike, received a major boost from the Saudi government after the e-government program "Yesser" launched its second edition of the Saudi e-Government Achievement Award (Enjaz).

The award will serve as a major tool to encourage, inspire and value government agencies' efforts for advancing e-government services in the Kingdom.

"The award is designed to value efforts made by government agencies to support the keen interest of the Kingdom's wise leadership in providing better and more customer friendly e-services to individuals and businesses," said Ali bin Saleh Al-Soma, Yesser chief.
