A heavy duty, high-tech, water resistant mobile portable device is now ready to nab offending foreign workers in quick time.

The Enforcement Section of the Immigration and National Registration Department has gone hi-tech with the launching of its Mobile Personal Computer (PC) yesterday that can trace dubious travel documents or KPP holders during raids or inspections.

This was one of the three products launched yesterday in the department's efforts to enhance the quality of its services to the public and to empower its law enforcement via info-communication technology.

Some Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have questioned the effectiveness of government agencies online services as a number of business owners do not even know how to use a computer and applicants are still required to visit the related agency to make payments.

An entrepreneur said she was frustrated when she tried to apply for a commercial import permit for plants with the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources which is currently in the process of migrating their services online.

It has been a number of years since the e-Government initiative was introduced, but it is still considered to be in its infancy, said a senior government officer yesterday when asked on his opinion regarding progress within the initiative.

The senior official, who could not be named, informed The Brunei Times that the lag in the initiative is due to implementation of ideas which sometimes falls short within the management system of each respective ministries and could also be attributed to the lack of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Programmes.

Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Mohd Yusof on Saturday visited the National Disaster Management Centre to oversee the building renovation, the Fire & Rescue Management System - Communication & Mobilisation Centre and the project site of Rimba Fire Station, according to a press release from the Fire and Rescue Department.

The visit began at the NDMC building. The renovation project involves the Ministry of Home Affairs' initiative to upgrade the old Fire and Rescue Headquarters to better coordinate disaster management in the country by employing state-of-the-art technology with the capability to accommodate multi-agency workstation environment.

The Minister of Communications said yesterday the Land Transport Information System (SPD) of the Land Transport Department is expected to change, if not wipe out completely, all the negative and unhealthy elements in administration and service.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kenn Dato Seri Setia Awg (Dr) Hj Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong said this at the launching of the SPD yesterday.
