State-owned construction and investment enterprise PT PP (Persero) Tbk has agreed to cooperate with a South Korean company to implement a smart city project in Nusantara, Indonesia's new national capital (IKN), in East Kalimantan.

The cooperation between the two companies will ensure the best synergy between the construction and information technology sectors to provide smart city solutions in Nusantara, PT PP's (Persero) Building Operation Director Anton Satyo Hendriatmo observed.

Digital acceleration was the key to boosting national competitiveness, with the value of Indonesia's digital economy projected to double to US$146 billion by 2025, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated.

"Accelerating digital transformation is the key to unlocking our potential in global competitiveness and long-term development and empowering people and businesses to seize new market opportunities, particularly for post-pandemic recovery," the minister noted in an official statement received on Monday, September 19.

Deputy Governor of Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria has invited alumni of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to help develop the capital city into a smart city.

"The theme is to upgrade Jakarta into a smart city for big data," the Deputy Governor was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Jakarta's Alumni Association (IA) of ITB here on Sunday.

During the 21st anniversary celebration of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Minister Johnny G. Plate said that the nation would continue to strengthen its collaboration to boost its digital economy. He encouraged the ministries, institutions, the central and regional governments, and the private sector to confront the digital transformation problems collectively.

The present concern, according to Minister Johnny, is cyberattacks that occur in the digital arena. He explained that readiness must also be balanced with the ability to prevent and contain cyber-attacks. “In various forms and ways, on the network as well as at the endpoints or endpoints to laptops, servers, gadgets and so on, you must have it. For that, we need to work together with the ministry’s institutions to ensure and to maintain that the firewall is well-available.”

Korean electronics and industrial conglomerate LG Corporation has been engaged to draw up a plan for smart urban transport in Indonesia’s new capital city, set to be built in the province of East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, The Korean Economic Daily reports.

The city, which is to be called Nusantara, is expected to cost around $38bn to build. It will be based on smart city principles, including autonomous electric vehicles, telemedicine, smart education and drone deliveries.
