A total of 2,000 visits to the e-Government Blog were recorded during a one-hour public dialogue with Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa.

Shaikh Ahmed interacted with the public regarding comments, suggestions and recommendations on issues related to e-government operations.

This interaction follows the launch of the eGovernment Blog on the national portal bahrain.bh last week.

The Ministry of Works (MoW), in partnership with the eGovernment Authority, recently launched the 'Abnormal Load Permission' eService on the eGovernment National Portal (www.bahrain.bh).

The eService allows businessmen to apply for abnormal load permissions for trucks and other heavy vehicles online with ease and convenience, needing only to complete an electronic form which contains details such as the desired route and load and carrier details.

Work will start later this year on Bahrain's 2011-2014 new e-government strategy, said Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalah said on Wednesday.

"The three-year scheme will be unveiled by middle of next year," Sheikh Ahmed added.

Once completed and approved, the strategy will be implemented by early 2011.

Bahrain residents will soon be able to pay their electricity and water bills using their mobile telephones, in the latest of a series of eGovernment initiatives on the island state.

By the beginning of September, customers will be able to use their handsets to settle utilities accounts. Currently, residents are only able to use their mobiles to check the amount they owe.

Bahrain has welcomed the decision of UN official to establish a Regional Centre for Exchange of Know How and Expertise in Technology and e-Government here.

This was decided during a meeting held on Friday between Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Atiyatallah Al Khalifa with Director of Division for Public Administration and Development Management at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Haiyan Qian and Inter-Regional Advisor on e-Government division Richard Kirby.
