The United Nations e-Government Readiness Report 2010 has ranked Bahrain as the top e-government portal in the Middle East and the 13th globally, senior Bahraini officials said Monday. The new placement on the biennial report - where the Gulf island has moved up 29 spots on the index ranking from its previous 42 spot - also ranks it 3rd Asia-wide behind South Korea and Singapore, after placing 8th in 2008.

South Korea ranked first in the report, followed by the United States, and Canada.

A new Education Ministry e-service has been launched on the e-Government National Portal. The e-service registration for continuous education programmes was launched in co-operation with the e-Government Authority.

It offers registration for the language programmes provided by the ministry through its community services and continuous education departments.

The e-Service run by Bahrain”s health authorities for the issuance of birth certificates was chosen as the best electronic service at the First Gulf Conference for e-Government held in Oman last week.

Bahrain’s health ministry competed with more than 40 government entities from six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

In cooperation with the eGovernment Authority in Bahrain, the Ministry of Education recently launched "Registration for Continuous Education Programs" eService on the eGovernment national portal Bahrain.bh and the Ministry of Education's website.

The new service offers eRegisteration to the language programs provided by the Ministry through the Community Services Department and Continuous Education Department, and comes as part of its efforts to provide effective eGovernment services to all citizens.

Bahrain has won top GCC awards for its e-government services. It topped all the five categories at an event held as part of the first GCC e-Governemnt Conference in Muscat, Oman.

The unified criminal systems of the Interior Ministry clinched the best e-government project award while the Industry and Commerce Ministry's e-investor took the best e-economic award.
