  • Pakistan: Leghari inaugurates free online access to statutes

    Country’s bars get free online access to statutes, case laws Federal Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari Friday inaugurated a massive e-justice programme to enable the country’s bar associations to have an easy online access to statutes and case laws.

    He launched the first part of the project by inaugurating the automation of Multan District Bar Association which also marks a simultaneous provision of online legal information to 3o other bar associations of Punjab province for a period of two years starting from Friday.

    Federal Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has granted conceptual approval to five projects aimed at expanding the IT base and using information technology as a tool to ensure a quick and efficient delivery of public services in the provincial departments.

    The Internet which stands as a primary communication medium of today’s electronic age is surely the catalyst behind improving Government information and services framework, a phenomenon of e-Government.

    In simple words e-Government is ‘use of information and communication technologies to encourage more capable cost effective Government functionaries, facilitate more handy service, allow greater access to information and make government more accountable to citizens’.

  • Pakistan: LUMS E-Governance moot concludes: Indian expert urges effective use of technology

    The third International Conference on E-Governance (ICEG 2005) that stressed the need for a paradigm shift in social thinking to use technology to solve social problems, concluded at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on Monday. India’s Dr Faqir Chand Kohli, Tata Consultancy Services chairman emeritus, was the keynote speaker at the concluding session, said a LUMS press release.
  • Pakistan: Machine Readable Passports to be introduced from Sep 15

    Machine Readable Passport (MRP) will be introduced in the country from September, 15, 2004. The project will cost Rs 493 million. An agreement signing ceremony was held here Saturday in NADRA, head office in this regard. Director General Passport, Shafqat Naqvi and Director General Project, NADRA, Brig Muhammad Zubair Ahmad signed the accord. Chairman NADRA, Brig (Retd), Saleem Ahmad Moeen and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
  • Pakistan: Minister for timely completion of IT projects

    The Sindh Minister for Information Technology, Muhammad Raza Haroon, has expressed concern at the delay in the progress of E-Government Pilot Project.

    He was presiding over a meeting which reviewed the progress of different IT projects of his Department, says a statement issued here on Monday. It said that the Minister was not satisfied with the progress E-Government Pilot Project and issued directives that the project should be completed and launched by August 31 this year so that the government can switch over from manual to electronic office system.

  • Pakistan: Moot on use of ICT in Political Science held at University of Karachi

    As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) becomes more widely used in research and education, early adoption and dissemination of emerging technology tools in the governance and study of political sciences can give global recognition as it requires a pre-set profile that can represent us in the main stream.

    This was stated by the Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi (KU), Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, here on Wednesday. Dr Qasim was delivering the presidential address on the occasion of the certificate distribution ceremony of a 15 day workshop. The event, titled `Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Political Science’, was organized by the Department of Political Science, University of Karachi.

  • Pakistan: Nadra develops e Toll system to ease traffic congestion

    To cope with the enormous increase in traffic on the motorways, congestion at the toll plazas, both at the time of entry and exit, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has developed e-Toll system to ease movement of vehicles and fool proof accounting of vehicles. It would help overcome congestion which becomes acute during weekends, holiday seasons and even at specific times of each working day. The system basically consists of a re-usable electronic-tag which is attached to the windscreen of vehicles with a prepaid toll amount issued through e-Tag issuance booths placed just before entry to the motorway. Later on such booths would be established at different convenient locations and pre-pay facility for e-Tags will subsequently be through cheques, credit cards and kiosks.

  • Pakistan: Nadra set to introduce online verification system

    The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA), utilizing its own resources, is providing a platform for e-government and technological advancement to the public and private sector.

    This was stated by the authority chairman, Saleem Ahmed Moeen, here on Sunday while speaking at a seminar.

  • Pakistan: No foreign access to NADRA, Rehman Malik

    Rehman Malik Minister for Interior on Friday categorically denied any foreign access to country’s organizations having data-collecting mechanism including National Database and Registration Authority.

    He was talking to journalists after launching the CNIC Verification Service through SMS and NADRA’s newly designed website at NADRA headquarter.

  • Pakistan: One Stop Information – National Rabta Information Portal Launched

    State Minister for Information & Broadcasting Mr. Syed Sumsam Ali Shah Bukhari has inaugurated today ‘National Rabta Information Portal' (www.pakistan.pk), a single source facilitation web portal developed by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), providing information and content repository to information seekers from within and outside the country at one place. Secretary Cabinet, Mr. Abdur Rauf Chaudhry and Member Telecom, Ministry of IT were also present during the ceremony.

    Speaking at the occasion, State Minister for Information & Broadcasting Mr. Syed Sumsam Ali Shah Bukhari said that the Government of Pakistan has a strong believe in utilizing Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) to move into the era of electronic service delivery (e-Services) by simplifying procedures, and making credible and timely information available to all the citizens at all levels. The electronic access of information will improve the productivity and efficiency of public and private organizations. This would ultimately contribute to economic activities and bring benefits to the country. He further said that the government is committed to promote freedom of expression and access to information in the greater public interest. The State Minister congratulated Chairman PTA and his team, on the development of such an informative portal for Pakistan. He said that it will bring plenty of information not only to the residents and ex-patriats Pakistanis but also to the foreigners visiting Pakistan.

  • Pakistan: PCB to train govt servants, system administrators in IT skills

    A high-level meeting of the ministerial review committee chaired by Federal Information Technology Minister Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has approved several projects for the training of government employees in the IT skills.

    The projects approved at the meeting cover the training of government servants, end users, system administrators, and the setting up of a resource centre. During the meeting, the federal minister for IT directed the Pakistan Computer Bureau (PCB) to aggressively launch the training of government servants throughout the country.

  • Pakistan: PM directs Ministry of Information to speed up E-Governance function

    Cabinet approved MoU on Managed Immigration between Pakistan-UK

    Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who chaired the Cabinet meeting here directed the Ministry of Information Technology to integrate automation Plan with processes because the world is moving with much faster speed than the speed of the file in the government offices, “Automation will give leading edge in governance”.

    The Cabinet asked the Ministries to appoint focal persons, not below the level of Joint Secretary, who will coordinate with the E-Government Directorate for the computerization of the respective Ministries.

    Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Monday reviewed the progress of E-Government and automation of Government Departments and Organizations.

    Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow pace of the progress, the Prime Minister directed that it should be accelerated.

  • Pakistan: President Zardari calls for developing e-governance programs

    President Asif Ali Zardari today called for developing pilot e‑governance programs to computerise land records, ensure easy access to the people to critical government services and document financial and other records for greater transparency. He said this during a meeting in which the Chairperson of Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre Dr. Khadija Haq, presented the Human Development in South Asia 2008 report highlighting the relationship of technology, e‑governance and human development in Pakistan.

    Briefing the media, Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said the Election Commission had already been advised to study the available models of electronic voting in other countries and develop a plan for using latest technologies for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections in a smooth manner.

  • Pakistan: Prime Minister reviews progress of NCGR

    Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro said Monday that performance of the government is directly related to efficiency and productivity of the government servants, who are responsible for implementation of the national policies. He was chairing a meeting to review the progress of National Commission for Government Reforms, (NCGR).

    He said capabilities and the quality of the civil services, can be further enhanced through capacity building programmes and by introduction of E-Governance.

  • Pakistan: Promotion of ICT education for governance stressed

    Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani called on Saturday for promoting Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) education and adopting modern ICT techniques to improve governance of public sector organisations.

    “E-government would not only improve efficiency but also cut down costs. There is a need for leveraging strategic partnerships with China for improvements in public and social sectors through the use of technology especially ICTs”, he said.

  • Pakistan: Prospects of boom for software industry brighten

    The country’s software industry is set to taste a windfall as the federal government has decided to award projects of the e-government of around one billion rupees to local companies.

    A senior official at the IT and telecom ministry said the prime minister, who also headed the National e-Government Council, had directed the ministry to initiate the project within a month with sources and techniques available in the country.

  • Pakistan: Punjab hospital staff to be monitored by satellite

    Punjab Health Sector Reforms Programme (PHSRP) will monitor, through satellite technology, the activities of all doctors, nurses and paramedical staffs working in Basic Health Units, Rural Health Centres, Tehsil Headquarter Hospitals and District Headquarter Hospitals across the province.

    It would be the first time in Pakistan that a satellite service would be used to monitor the performances of hospital staff in Pakistan. Earlier, doctors used this kind of technology but only to give live consultation to patients.

  • Pakistan: Punjab IT Dept abolished over poor working

    The Punjab government has abolished the Information Technology Department because of its failure in taking citizen-centric and business-friendly initiatives, while the Punjab Information Technology Board has been directed to take over its functions, responsibilities and assets.

    According to a source, it has also been decided that the PITB would be run on a corporate basis, and its chairman would be hired from the market, and he would be answerable to the chief minister.
