  • Pakistan to focus on flung areas for provision of broadband services

    The Pakistan Government is working on policy making and is taking initiatives especially for broadband proliferation and beyond voice services in Pakistan.

    The government is targeting far flung areas of Pakistan for provision of broadband services and very recently President of Pakistan has inaugurated a broadband project in an underserved district of Pak Patan. A number of fiber optic projects are also underway and we have recently introduced services like easy payments and IPTV for local telecom users, according to Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa, the Minister In charge MoIT.

  • Pakistan will assist Somalia in registering its citizens

    The National Database and Registration Authority Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Somalia to provide services to the country.

    Ambassador Khadija Mohamed signed MOU for Somalia in Islamabad. Pakistan PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi witnessed the signing.

  • Pakistan: 'Winding up PaCCS to hurt national interests'

    The decision to wind up Pakistan Automated Customs Computerised System (PaCCS) would hurt national interests, Karachi Customs Agents Association (KCCA) said in a statement issued here on Tuesday. Saifullah Khan, President of KCCA, said that closure of the first true initiative at e-governance in the country would be unfortunate and would push the country backwards.

    "The world is pushing computerisation while we are reverting to obsolete systems and procedures," he added. Customs does not have the capacity to cope with the ever-increasing load of trade, he said, adding that reverting to manual procedures would support corrupt elements while the country would suffer from reduced collections. The claim of reforming tax administration should be practised to bail out the country from shackles of poverty, he demanded.

  • Pakistan: Nadra is ensuring transparency, says official

    A reliable and secure citizen database is the most crucial factor that ensures transparency and fairness in e-government affairs, Deputy Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Tariq Malik has said.

    “Gone are the days, when e-government was regarded as mere setting up websites and disparate databases which do not talk to each other. Registering citizens and stacking up information of citizens is important but not enough. Evaluating consolidated trends and building public policy blocks on citizens data is the true transformation of e-government programmes,” he said in his paper presented at the ID World Conference held in Dubai this week.

  • Pakistan: ‘1.5mn Internet broadband connections in two years’

    Pakistan is aggressively working to provide 1.5mn Internet broadband connections under the Universal Service Fund (USF) in the next two years.

    The government is also using the USF to take basic telephony and Internet connectivity to the far-flung areas of the country, Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said yesterday.

  • Pakistan: ‘Internet Media City’ project soon

    Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister for Information Technology Noman Saigal, on Tuesday disclosed that the Sindh government has planned to develop an ‘Internet Media City’ in Karachi to promote information technology and media in the metropolis.

    Addressing a press conference, he said the ‘Internet Media City’ would cover almost 200 acres of land and it would be developed on lines with Dubai Media City. Saigal informed that the Sindh government was working on e-policing project, in which more than 400 police stations of Karachi would be computerised in the first phase. Through this project, recovery of stolen cars and other vehicles could be made easier, he added.

  • Pakistan: $500m automation project

    Sindh, Malaysian firm in final talks

    The Sindh government has entered into final talks with a Malaysian firm for awarding a $500 million contract for the automation of public service institutions in the province, a highly-placed source said on Monday.

    He said senior provincial officials visited Malaysia recently, where final phase of talks were held and eventually it was estimated the contract would cost $500 million to the Sindh government.

  • Pakistan: 12,000 post offices to be computerized

    All the General Post Offices (GPOs) in the country have been computerized while PC-1 for automation of 12,000 post offices has been sent to the government for approval,a source in Pakistan Post told APP here on Sunday.

    Automation of the institution under a new initiative would provide latest and modern postal services to the customers,he added.

  • Pakistan: 2.9 Billion Rupees of Universal Service Fund for Broadband and Optic Fiber Projects

    Universal Service Fund (www.usf.org.pk) signed three contracts with PTCL for providing Broadband Services in the Un-Served Urban areas of Southern Punjab and Lower Sindh and for providing Optic Fiber connectivity to all Tehsils in Southern Balochistan. CEO-PTCL, Walid Irshaid and Chief Executive Officer Universal Service Fund, Parvez Iftikhar signed these contracts.

    Universal Service Fund shall be paying Rs. 1.16 Billion for the project to provide broadband in un-served urban areas of Southern Punjab (MTR) and Rs. 550 Million for providing broadband in lower Sindh (STR-1). Similarly Rs. 1.2 Billion will be paid to PTCL for laying 1,166 Km Optic Fiber cables in Southern Balochistan.

  • Pakistan: 75% of house-holds in the country to be covered with high speed Internet by 2015: PM

    Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that we are moving forward with great speed to bridge the digital divide in the country by improving the access of information and communication technology to low-income groups and a target of 1.6 million broadband connections has been set for the next three years and infrastructure would be developed to cover 75% of house-holds in the country with high speed Internet by 2015.

  • Pakistan: Adoption of modern ICT applications to improve efficiency of public sector organizations

    Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday called on Saturday for promoting Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) education and adopting modern ICT techniques to improve governance and efficiency of public sector organizations.E-government, he said, would not only improve efficiency but also cut down costs and contribute the austerity measures. He stressed the need for leveraging strategic partnerships with Chinese Government for Improvements in Public and Social Sectors through the use of advanced technology especially (ICTs).

    The Prime Minister was talking to a group of high level executives of Chinese telecom manufacturing company Zhongxing Telecom corporations (ZTE), headed by Mr. Lou Ping Fan, President Southeast Asia for the company. The meeting was also attended by Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan.

  • Pakistan: Awais launches PC-on-installment programme for govt employees

    Federal Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari Thursday launched the multi-billion ’Pak PC’ program’ to provide affordable, high-quality PCs available to all government employees in the country.

    Spearheaded by the Ministry of Information Technology and supported by Intel Pakistan Corporation along with National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Bearing Point, the ’Pak PC’ initiative is a concerted government effort designed to provide a greater choice of affordable and functional PCs, from entry-level, high performance desktops PCs to notebooks for government employees at very nominal monthly installments.

    The ministry of IT and telecom is set to give final presentation to President General Pervez Musharraf on Rs40 million e-justice project under e-government programme, which enables the country’s bar associations to have an easy online access to statutes and case laws.

    Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom along with senior officials of the ministry would brief the president regarding the project to have his nod for the programme.

  • Pakistan: Awais, Naseer inaugurate Rs 39m PIMS automation project

    Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari Monday said the government was aggressively implementing a massive e-government plan with projects worth millions of rupees already under way to introduce efficient and service-oriented governance at all tiers of government.

    "An efficient and timely provision of essential services such as healthcare is the key pillar of the government’s vision to move towards a happy and prosperous Pakistan," he said in his address to the inaugural ceremony of Rs 39 million automation of PIMS project at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Health Minister Muhammad Nasir Khan, IT Secretary Farrakh Qayyum, PIMS Executive Director Fazal-e-Hadi and other senior officials were also present.

  • Pakistan: Better economic productivity, human development

    The limited adoption and diffusion of technology should be seriously addressed to enhance economic productivity, improve human development through adequate public service delivery, and overall governance in South Asia – the region, which is the most populous, malnourished, and poorly-governed in the world.

  • Pakistan: Bureaucrats creating hurdles to e-govt programme: minister

    Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Thursday blamed bureaucracy for hurdles in implementation of e-government programme.

    "The bureaucracy's desire to sit on the public information to perpetuate its power and authority is a major stumbling block in the implementation of e-government programme," he said addressing the launching ceremony of a new web portal of the Government of Pakistan www.pakistan.gov.pk. The Electronic Government Directorate organised the function. Leghari said his ministry had diligently pursued the e-government programme and launched various initiatives and projects in recent months but some of them failed to pick up because they undercut the power and authority of the bureaucracy.
