  • Is your biometric data safe online? ISO/IEC standard ensures security and privacy

    Biometrics, like fingerprints and iris scans, is being used more and more as a reliable form of authentication for online transactions. But how can we be sure that this data won’t be compromised? To ensure security and privacy when managing and processing biometric information, ISO and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have jointly published a new International Standard, ISO/IEC 24745:2011, Information technology – Security techniques – Biometric information protection.

    Biometrics refers to the automated identification of individuals based on their behavioural and physiological characteristics. It includes recognition technologies based on face, iris or palms image, voice patterns and the like e.g. fingerprint scans used to access a computer, or iris scans to cross border control.

    Information and communication technology (ICT) governance, security and safety in developing countries is often overlooked—but it is an important topic and international awareness and support could be very valuable. There are many aspects to this issue, including ICT-related lack of governance, insecurities, system vulnerabilities, and lack of governance and security standards used in the private and public sectors, especially under current circumstances where government agency stakeholders are less involved.

    Global trade and logistics now require local attention. If ICT governance and security is left unaddressed, the outcomes could compromise worldwide transactions, increase the time needed to complete deals, expose confidential information and hinder important data from being used effectively. All of these factors can cause enterprises to lose value and reduce profits.

  • IT-Experten geben Empfehlungen für die nationale Sicherheit der USA

    Nicht das FBI sollte im Kampf gegen den Terror die Federführung haben, sondern ein neues Department of Homeland Security (DHS). So lautet eine der Empfehlungen des Berichts Task Force on National Security in the Information Age der Nonprofit-Organisation Markle Foundation. Deren Vorsitzende Zoë Baird und James Barksdale meinen, die USA würden einen Fehler begehen, wenn sie die Informationssuche und -sammlung an einem Ort konzentrieren würden. Stattdessen treten sie für ein dezentralisiertes IT-Netzwerk ein, dass gegenüber terroristischen Bedrohungen besser geschützt sei. Damit stellen sich die 34 Mitglieder der Task Force offensichtlich gegen Bestrebungen, die Ermittlungsbefugnisse des FBI zu erweitern.

    Regierung setzt Teams zur Sicherung von Informationsnetzwerken ein.

    Mit einem Netzwerk von Notfallzentralen will die Regierung künftig Informations- und Kommunikationsnetzwerke besser sichern. Ein Verbund von Computernotfallteams werde am Wochenende seine Arbeit aufnehmen, teilte das Innenministerium am Freitag in Berlin mit. Deutschland verfüge damit über ein weltweit einzigartiges Frühwarnsystem bei IT- Störfällen oder Terror-Anschlägen, hieß es.

    Die Informationstechnik stellt in einem technologisch hochentwickelten Land wie Deutschland mittlerweile eine geradezu existenzielle Infrastruktur dar. Laut einer Studie des Deutschen Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung ist die Zahl der Internetnutzer von 1995 bis Mai 2003 von 250 000 auf 39 Millionen gestiegen.   • NZ Opens National Cyber Security Centre

    The New Zealand government has officially opened today, its new National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) which will be in charge with helping to defend government agencies and critical infrastructure providers against cyber threats.

    “The global threat from cyber intrusions is real and growing, and New Zealanders and the New Zealand economy are not immune,” said Steven Joyce, Minister for Communications and Information Technology.

    “Cyber security is becoming increasingly important for New Zealanders, businesses and government. Cyber intrusions have the potential to impact on the reliability of critical infrastructure, government services, and the economy.”

  • OM: Information Technology Authority fast tracks initiative for national data centre

    The Information Technology Authority (ITA) is aiming to submit a tender with the Tender Board for the design of its new national data centre within three months, as it presses on with plans to move services online.

    With a study currently underway to decide where the centre will be situated, the facility's prime function will be to ensure 'business continuity,' according to Dr Salim al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA.

    Speaking to Muscat Daily on the sidelines of the 'DatacentreDynamics' conference at the Grand Hyatt Muscat, Ruzaiqi said that the location of the centre is crucial, adding that it has to be connected to two main power lines - to ensure constant power supply.

    The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has launched 'HIFZ', which specializes in data storage and protection from disasters, as a new and additional service to the academic, research and government agencies in the Kingdom.

    Dr. Hisham Saleh Bin Abbas, the supervisor of the Internet services unit, said that the service is designed to enable users of the KACST website, from academic and research institutions, to save the data of their backup copies for reference in case of an emergency.
