  • Regulation and awareness key to ICT growth in Brunei Darussalam

    High-speed internet services should act as a key driver in Brunei Darussalam’s bid to attract investment and transform itself into a knowledge-based economy, although industry experts say further regulatory reform will accelerate ICT uptake and boost penetration.

    The Sultanate has made significant progress in rolling out faster and more efficient connection speeds, with growing demand for the services highlighted at a three-day awareness campaign held in early February when state telecoms operator TelBru notched up its 1000th connection to the country’s Fibre To The Home (FTTH) facility.

  • $4 Million More For Social Services In Brunei's 2004-05 Budget

    The biggest slice of the budget allocation for the Year 2004-2005 went to the Social Services sector, which got an increase of $4 million as compared to its fund for 2003.

    Meanwhile, Transport & Communication received a $2 million boost to its fund.

    However, according to the latest Brunei's Economic Bulletin report, the Public Utilities saw a decrease from its $178 million fund in 2003 to $166 million for 2004-2005.

    Bruneians will soon get their e-Passport, also referred to as biometric passport, when the Department of National Registration and Immigration officially completes and launches the project this year.

  • Big Win for Universiti Brunei Darussalam's e-Government Innovation Centre

    The e-Government Innovation Centre (eG.InC) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) bagged the award for 'Citizen Engagement' in the Asia Pacific FutureGov Awards and Summit 2012 after being shortlisted in three categories 'Business Process', 'Technology Leadership', and 'Citizen Engagement'.

    The other shortlisted candidates in the 'Citizen Engagement' category were Adelaide City Council (Australia), Surakarta City Government (Indonesia), CTRC, Korea National Police Agency (South Korea) and Metropolitan Police Bureau (Thailand).

  • BN: 5G experience at MYCE

    A showcase on 5G is being held by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam(AITI) at their booth at the Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2021 until June 20 from 9am to 6pm.

    The showcase is part of efforts to raise awareness on 5G’s economic impact and opportunity with the emergence of various 5G applications. According to AITI, the showcase will demonstrate the three characteristics of 5G:

    The E-Government National Centre (EGNC) is implementing the National Information Hub (NIH) to serve as a platform for information integration among government agencies in support of the sharing information initiative. Through the NIH’s Single Repository, common and uncommon data can be obtained from trusted sources and supported by back-end system of government departments or agencies in need. The NIH project was among the initiatives under the EGNC highlighted during a working visit by Legislative Council (LegCo) members to the centre yesterday.

  • BN: Business Licensing System Could Enhance `Ease Of Doing Business'

    The Business Licensing System will be an integrated system that provides forms through interfaces to three information hubs - 'people', 'business' and 'land' - for parallel processing of business licensing applications, status tracking of applications, and online, payment facilities.

    The system also sends out convenient alerts and notifications via SMS and e-mail.

    This was stated by the Acting Director of the Management and Finance Division of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Effandi bin Hj Salleh in a speech during the dialogue with small and medium entreprises (SMEs) on the use of Brunei Licensing System (BLS) yesterday.

    In the new digital age, it is important for people to embrace the digital skills and values of the new and rapidly emerging world of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

    However, the use of ICT must be in harmony with our core traditional values i.e. they must first be integrated into the values of our MIB (Malay Islamic Monarchy) philosophy.

    This observation was made by the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, during the official launching of the "e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint for ICT in Education for National Development" at the Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday.

  • BN: Call To Increase Govt's IT Usage

    With the adoption and usage of IT in the government workplace still low, the permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries have been asked not to remain passive but instead become the driving force in the country's e-Government transformation.

    According to Pehin Datu Singamanteri Col (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin bin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office who is also the Minister-in-Charge of e-Government, statistics from the EGNC (e-Government National Centre) indicated that only 15 per cent of the registered government e-mail accounts are active, while statistics on GEMS absorption rate showed that less than 26 per cent of GEMS accounts created for all government employees are used.

    As with the rise of any technology and its use for industrial development, there are bound to be misapplications and misuse, said Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof.

    “The utilisation of big data presents cybersecurity threats and invasion of privacy, as well as the rise of Deep Fakes, posing great threats to society in general. From policy and regulatory perspectives, we are now working on the necessary legal frameworks to address these concerns. This includes the Cyber Security Order to ensure the protection of our Critical Information Infrastructures (CII), as well as the Personal Data Protection Order to prevent unauthorised and unconsented sharing of personal data and information,” he added.

  • BN: Darussalam hotline introduces ‘TD123 Live Chat’ and ‘TD123 Mobile App’

    The E-Government National Centre (eGNC) of the Prime Minister’s Office announced two new channels on Thursday for the public hotline, Darussalam Line 123 (TD123): the ‘TD123 Mobile App’ and the‘TD123 Live Chat’.

    The ‘TD123 Mobile App’ enables members of the public to send photos and keep up with the status of their complaints, aside from receiving notifications on their smartphones and tablets.

  • BN: e-Government Executive Training Programme Gets Underway

    The e-Government Executive Training Programme for Permanent Secretaries and Deputy Permanent Secretaries commenced yesterday, organised by the e-Government Innovation Centre (eG.InC), University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in collaboration with the e-Government National Centre (EGNC).

    The opening ceremony, held at the Indera Samudra grand Hall of The Empire Hotel and Country Club, was attended by Dato Paduka Awg Hj Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister's Office on behalf of Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awg Hj Mohammad Yasmin bin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of Brunei's e-Government Leadership Forum.

  • BN: e-government projects have been completed at a cost of 267.2 million dollars

    The allocation for e-government which incorporates the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for the fiscal year 2011/2012 was among the topics deliberated at the meeting.

    Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Haji Idris queried as to how many projects from last year's budget for ICT have been carried out. According to Yang Berhormat, it was understood that the implementation of ICT projects were somehow slow.

  • BN: e-Hijrah on track, consultants say momentum is key

    The 21st Century brings with it technological advancements that have been utilised in significant areas of development, and Brunei has willingly embraced positive modern change for its educational system. Such willingness is manifested in the recent introduction of the e-Hijrah movement under the Ministry of Education.

    According to consultants from New Zealand-based globalSOF Consortium, who has been appointed to assist with the ambitious six-year project, e-Hijrah is "on track, with a number of the 47 initiatives under e-Hijrah to be rolled out this year".

  • BN: E-Hijrah To Transform ICT Education

    The digital confidence and capability of teachers and students and the development of educational e-Services are set to be increased with the implementation of the Ministry of Education's (MoE) new ICT initiative, 'e-Hijrah', as they prepare to transform ICT in education for National Development.

    The MoE released details of the new initiative in a recent press conference on February 24 and the Acting Director of the ICT Department at the MoE was quoted as saying, "The e-Hijrah Initiative led by the Department of ICT is designed to support and accelerate the rate of change and innovation in the education system initiated by SPN21 and to support achieving the goals of Wawasan 2035."
