  • Brunei And Korea Expect Dramatic Changes From e-Government

    Establishing e-government provides a rare opportunity for Brunei Darussalam and Korea to scrutinize the current work processes in government.

    The e-Government will redefine how government relates to citizens and businesses as well as how it relates internally to its own agencies and its own employees.

  • Brunei boosts IT training for staff

    The Brunei Darussalam government has announced early this month the creation of an Academy where government employees will be trained in IT to further the country’s e-government vision.

    The E-Government National Centre (EGNC), a department under the Brunei Darussalam Prime Minister’s Office, has teamed up with Microsoft to design and implement training programmes that will increase the IT skills of government employees through an Academy.

    The initiative is a part of the government’s Human Capacity Development programme, under which the ICT capability and capacity of the civil service will be improved. The end objective is for the country to increase its ranking in the the United Nations list of e-government enabled countries.

  • Brunei Braces Up For e-Government Full Implementation

    The outlook of Brunei's aspiration and vision to the full implementation of e-Government for next year is set on its course especially with the support of APEC ministers aired during their Ministerial Meeting in November.

    In a joint declaration, the ministers endorsed the APEC Privacy Framework and the Future Work Agenda on International Implementation of the APEC Privacy Framework.

  • Brunei Can Climb World ICT Readiness Rankings Through 'Environment'

    With a ranking of 63rd out of 133 countries in ICT readiness, Brunei trails behind Vietnam but has bested Philippines and Cambodia, according to a report that provides an annual assessment of global economies. But a major shift in one of the three factors that determine the measurements would enable the country to dramatically rise up the ranks, consultants said.

    The measurement used is the Networked Readiness Index (NRI), which is determined by three branching factors: Environment, Readiness and Usage.

    The Global Information Technology Report (GITR) also indicates that the country's government readiness towards ICT had actually fallen, while business readiness climbed. The biggest jump by sector in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI), from 40 (NRI 2008/2009) to 76 (NRI 2009/2010), actually came from individuals.

  • Brunei climbs 19 places in UN e-govt rankings

    Brunei has moved up 19 places in the United Nations’ global e-government development rankings over the past two years, a senior UN official said yesterday during a three-day International Conference on E-government and Administrative Simplification.

    Haiyan Qian, director of UN’s Division for Public Administration and Development Management under the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said that this year Brunei has been ranked 68th out 192 UN member states surveyed for the development of their respective e-governments. In 2008, Brunei ranked 87th.

    The Information Department website was officially launched yesterday by Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, Pengiran Dato Hj Abdul Hamid Pengiran Hj Mohd Yassin, at The Centrepoint Hotel, Gadong.

    The electronic diary outlining daily activities throughout the nation was created by the Department of Information, Prime Minister's Office through one of its e-government initiative.

    In an exclusive interview with FutureGov, Brunei’s Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Awang haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong speaks about overcoming the biggest challenge of breaking down silos in government.

    Coming from Ministry of Communications, Yang Berhomat Pehin Abu Bakar is one who understands technology and the issues around it. When he first took on the role of Minister of Communications, Brunei was spending close to B$1 billion (US$0.8 billion) on e-government. “One of the important initiatives then was to review the implementation of e-government. The study quickly revealed a glaring problem - ministries and agencies were operating in silos. When it came to IT procurement, departments tended to buy off-the-shelf products that might not be suitable for Brunei,” he said.

  • Brunei Envisions e-Smart For 21st Century Civil Service

    Brunei has drawn up a strategic framework identifying a robust roadmap towards envisioning an e-Smart Government in line with the 21st century civil service vision.

    Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Hamid, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, spelled this out in his working paper on the spearheading k-Economy through e-Government in Brunei.

  • Brunei Gets 17th Place In E-Government

    Brunei Darussalam has moved up to the 17th position out of 198 countries for the e-Government country ranking in the "Improving Technology Utilisation in Electronic Government around the World 2008" report by the Governance Studies of the Brookings Institution.

    This has been a big leap for the country which was placed at 28th position in 2007.

  • Brunei Government On Facebook?

    Brunei government is looking to adopt "e-participation" tools, which include social networking sites such as Facebook, in its bid to increase public interaction under the national e-government initiative, officials said yesterday.

    "Apart from the present (government) website, we need to use whatever tools are available to reach out to the general public. Tools such as Facebook are something we can explore," said the Acting e-Government National Centre (EGNC) Director.

    However, depicting the government on such open and often considered "informal" social networking sites does have its challenges, an issue which The Brunei Times highlighted to the acting director.

  • Brunei government to spend US$2.9 million on portal

    Brunei Darussalam's Ministry of Communications has awarded the contract to build an integrated service portal to Singapore-based Ecquaria Technologies.

    In support of the Brunei Government's plan to transform the delivery of public services to citizens, the Ministry of Communications (MinCom) has commissioned design and deployment of a central e-government platform that Brunei's government agencies can develop robust web services rapidly, efficiently and securely for use by the public.

    A new government department called e-Government National Centre has been formed, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement yesterday.

    By command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister's Office stated that His Majesty has consented to the formation of the new department - "E-Government National Centre".

  • Brunei introduces new scoring system for APICTA

    In what will be a milestone towards developing solutions catered towards both domestic and global markets of the IT industry Brunei Darussalam looks set to introduce a new and enhanced locally-designed and developed scoring system to be standardised by judges in the assessment of participants’ presentations in the Asia-Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2012, which is being hosted by the country and begins today at The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Borneo Bulletin reported.

    “This year we have decided to start from scratch to develop a scoring system based on the work flow of APICTA using all these letters, tools and features within the scoring system,” said Dr Yong Chee Tuan, Chief Judge of APICTA 2012, in an interview with the Bulletin.
