  • India leads ICT research in South Asia

    India has emerged as a leader in research on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in South Asia with the highest number of research publications on the subject, says a new study.

    According to a report of the study published online this month (2 August) in Scientometrics, about 88 per cent of ICT publications in South Asia originate in India.

  • Sweden tops rankings of global technology report for first time

    Sweden tops the rankings of The Global Information Technology Report 2009-2010, released today by the World Economic Forum. The report highlights the key role of ICT as an enabler of a more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable world in the aftermath of one of the most serious economic crises in decades. Sweden is followed by Singapore and Denmark, which was in the number one position for the last three years.

  • Danish towns beat Sweden, Norway for e-services

    Danish municipalities are ahead of those in Norway and Sweden when it comes to providing digital services to the public, but are behind in terms of opportunities for mobile grid development, says the study 'The Nordic Broadband City Index 2012' commissioned by Telenor from Nexia International. The study looked at digital services for residents in the 43 largest towns in the three countries as well as the conditions for developing mobile telephony and broadband infrastructure.

  • Kuwait makes progress in Global ICT Competitiveness report -- CSO

    Kuwait has moved up 13 positions to 62th place in World Economic Forum's Global Information and Communications Technology report 2012-2013, the Kuwaiti Central Statistical Office (CSO) announced Sunday. In a press statement, CSO hailed the remarkable progress in Kuwait's rank in the report as a clear evidence of upgrade of Kuwait information and telecommunications technology sectors.

    It noted that the electronic and field census of the country's population, buildings and institutions for 2011 has played an important role in the change of Kuwait's rank.

    In cooperation with Ministry of Telecommunications, the CSO has updated all data related to information and telecommunication sector in Kuwait and was sent to all relevant international organizations.

  • Malta ranks second in e-Government in EU 27+

    Malta has retained its leading EU ranking in the quality of its e-Government, registering substantial qualitative progress in its services and confirming the country’s services as excellent European models in this field.

    This was confirmed in the European Commission’s annual report on e-Government services provided by the member States.

  • Malta's eGovernment places second amongst EU public online services

    Malta's public online services, known as eGovernment, have improved significantly and are now at the top levels amongst EU member states, a report published by the European Commission has revealed.

    The report, which was carried out by IT company Capgemini, analysed thousands of websites in areas such as tax, social services and construction permits in the EU member states as well as Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.

  • Taiwan ranks 8th in e-government survey by Waseda University

    Taiwan moved up two notches to place eighth in the 2013 world e-government rankings, according to a survey on how extensively and well governments are operating electronically, the country's Research, Development and Evaluation Commission said Friday.

    The rankings were the results of a survey conducted by Japan's Waseda University recently. The commission said that Taiwan shared the eighth place with Denmark, with a score of 83.52.

  • UAE among top three nations in digital govt

    The UAE has taken a giant leap in offering eGovernance and secured a position among the top three countries in the world that have been applauded for digital governance — from offering online portals to accessing public services to employing digital channels and social media to communicate and engage with citizens.

    It was revealed by a new comparative report by Accenture that Singapore, Norway and the UAE rank first, second and third, respectively, among 10 countries in their use of “digital government.”

  • UAE ranks 32nd in UNDESA e-government readiness index

    The UAE was ranked 32nd in e-government readiness index among the 192 member states in the fourth-edition of the eGovernment survey conducted by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).

    The country, which came 42nd in 2005, has outperformed other Gulf countries. The report ranks Bahrain 42nd, followed by Qatar at 53, Kuwait at 57, Saudi Arabia at 70 and Oman at 84.

  • AE: Innovation (Index for (Abu Dhabi

    The Department of Economic Development (DED) in Abu Dhabi is developing an Abu Dhabi Innovation Index.

    The index, which is being developed in collaboration with INSEAD International Business School, will monitor and follow up the progress being made by the emirate towards becoming a knowledge-based economy by 2030. It will also identify the potential gaps in the process of economic transformation, said Mohammed Omar Abdullah, undersecretary of the DED, at a knowledge management conference in the Capital.

  • Angola Stands 127th in UN Electronic Governance Ranking

    Angola stands in the 127th position in the ranking of the United Nations electronic governance ranking, after having risen 31 places from the year 2005 today.

    This was said Friday in Luanda by the deputy minister of Science and Technology, Pedro Teta.

    The official, who was reacting to this year’s UN e-Government Survey report, said this rise was owed to the central Government effort that led to the country’s shooting from its previous 158th position of the year 2005.

  • Another first for Bahrain!

    Bahrain has become the first country in the Middle East to win an International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) certification in the e-Government sector.

    The e-Government Authority (EGA) has been awarded the Information Security Certification - the international standard for protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.

    EGA successfully developed services that provide support for citizens, residents and businesses through its website and mobile phone portals, e-kiosks and e-service centres.

  • Asia Shows Up U.S. In E-Gov Study

    While progress in e-government remains steady in the United States, countries in Asia have climbed the ranks to dominate the global top five.

    For the fifth year in a row, researchers at Brown University evaluated 198 nations around the world to assess progress in digital-government initiatives. While the top three countries are the same as last year--Taiwan, Singapore and the United States, in that order--the ones on their tail changed a bit. Hong Kong climbed to fourth place from eleventh last year, and China overtook Canada to finish in the top five. The study also showed that 19 percent of government agencies around the world are offering online services, compared to 21 percent in 2004.

  • Asian countries are below average in e-government readiness: UN Survey

    The latest United Nation’s (UN) survey, measuring the readiness of member countries to adopt e-government, has found that many Asian countries are falling behind western nations.

    India, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand have not kept up with other countries.

    The UN E-Government Survey 2008, based on assessments of 192 U N member states, also shows software programming powerhouse India dropping 26 notches to 113 (down from 87th place in 2005), and the Philippines ranking 66, down from 41 in the 2005 index.

  • Asian countries fall in e-govt readiness

    Several countries in Asia have slipped in e-government readiness rankings, according to a new study released by the United Nations (U.N.).

    India fell 26 notches in the U.N. 2008 E-Government Readiness Index to 113th, compared to No. 87 in 2005, while the Philippines registered a rank of 66 in 2008, down from 41 in 2005.

    Singapore and Thailand each fell 16 spots from their 2005 ranking, occupying No. 23 and No. 62, respectively, in the latest index.

    Australia can learn from benchmarking used by the European Commission to measure the effectiveness of online government service provision, according to a public sector consultant.

    Capgemini Australia public sector head Shelley Oldham says Australia could benefit from applying a "service cluster lens" to its analysis of e-government services.

    The EC uses a ranking system to identify which member countries have implemented the most mature e-government services for citizens and business.

  • Bahrain e-government portal on top in Mideast, 13th globally

    The United Nations e-Government Readiness Report 2010 has ranked Bahrain as the top e-government portal in the Middle East and the 13th globally, senior Bahraini officials said Monday. The new placement on the biennial report - where the Gulf island has moved up 29 spots on the index ranking from its previous 42 spot - also ranks it 3rd Asia-wide behind South Korea and Singapore, after placing 8th in 2008.

    South Korea ranked first in the report, followed by the United States, and Canada.
