GR: Meet the city of the future: Ellinikon

The 8 billion-euro Ellinikon project in Greece – which took inspiration from Singapore – is set to become a global template for others to follow

Deep inside a cavernous hangar on the site of Athens’ former airport, a Lamda Development executive is discussing one of the world’s most significant construction projects. In front of him is a large interactive screen stretching across an entire wall of the room. With a few flicks, he pulls up a virtual 3D rendering of the area, zooms past a park, and enters an apartment. We’re now “standing” in the apartment’s balcony, where we can see exactly what the view from this soon-to-be-built tower will be like, down to the gently swaying treeline. As we take in the seaside panorama, the executive taps the screen again, and the room instantly glows orange from a simulated sunset.

The data storage behind smart and safe cities

Whilst technological breakthroughs and the adoption of digital technologies have brought a new era of progress, it can sometimes be hard for the untrained eye to recognise cutting-edge innovations in everyday life. However, smart cities are a key field where new technologies, such as smart video, directly and visibly, raise living standards.

Smart cities use information and communication technologies to improve operational efficiency, share information with the public and provide a better quality of local authority services. For example, advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have enabled connected public transportation systems, which leverage real-time monitoring capabilities, as well as tracking the locations and routes of public vehicles. Not only does this speed up service times and reduce traffic congestion, it also cuts waiting times for passengers and keeps them informed.

I enjoy the walks, despite the traffic, despite the crowding on sidewalks (which means that at times you have to get off the pavement and walk on the main road to avoid bumping into fellow pedestrians).

It means dodging the traffic at several points including the place where four roads meet near the Seventh Day Adventist Church, with one rushing up from Nongrim and the Bethany Hospital side, another one-way past the Fire Bridge field, yet another coming after a merger ‘s side and the main road from Laitumkhrah. of the road from Jowai and one from St Edmunds.

IN: Smart cities gear up for a transport revolution

Integrating AI-powered traffic management systems, extending metro lines, and converting obsolete buildings into Electric Vehicle charging stations can support the transition

What makes a city ‘smart’? The answer lies in innovative planning and designs, robust infrastructure and forward-thinking policies.

The rapid pace of urbanisation and its consequent challenges have catalysed a deep transformation within the sphere of urban transport. An important aspect of shaping smart cities for the transport revolution is the strategic development of infrastructure. For example in a city like Mumbai, the expansion of the metro network is a key initiative aimed at addressing traffic congestion and pollution of the city. By extending metro lines to underserved areas and improving connectivity, the city reduces dependence on personal vehicles, promoting a shift towards public transit. This infrastructure is about adding routes and creating a web of connectivity that makes public transport a more viable and attractive option.

    PH: Smart institutions, smart leadership

The advent of technology can no longer be undermined, specifically its major impact on various societies. Broome County is enlisting the expertise of Cornell researchers and other specialists to implement advanced “smart city” technology, aiming to potentially enhance flood warnings, provide real-time parking updates and optimize waste management.

Those were some of the ideas discussed at the “What are Smart Cities?” forum hosted by the City of Binghamton’s Office of Economic Development and Cornell Engineering on May 16 in Binghamton. Forum attendees included municipal leaders, industry experts, nonprofit organizations, and academics from Cornell and SUNY Binghamton.

NG: Governor AbdulRazaq: Transforming Ilorin with new Master Plan, 20,000-hectare Smart City

Governor AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, last Wednesday marked the fifth anniversary of his administration in grand style as he unveiled the Ilorin Master Plan and the 20,000-hectare Ilorin Smart City project. The governor also commissioned the 4.7km Yebumot-Adeta Roundabout and Adeta-Oloje roads, which he named after two elder statesmen from the capital city — retired Major General Mohammed Abdullahi Adangba and prominent scholar Sheikh Yahya Murtadha Agodi.

As Governor AbdulRasaq was commissioning projects in Ilorin, his deputy, Kayode Alabi was in the northern senatorial district of the state to commission the Jebba waterworks, ending the community’s longstanding thirst for state-owned clean water source.

GR: What we know about The Ellinikon, Athens’ upcoming smart city

With a team of international architects including Norman Foster, Kengo Kuma, and Bjarke Ingels, this is how construction is progressing on one of Europe’s most important urban regeneration projects.

Ellinikon is currently one of the largest European urban redevelopment projects underway on the coastal part of Athens. With an estimated budget of 8 billion euros, the ambitious project will bring back to life the obsolete site of the Athens International Airport, which operated from 1938 to 2001, before a new one was inaugurated for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Smart Cities and EU Compliance: Data Governance and Sustainability

Among the 10 leading smart cities in the world, as of 2024, seven were in Europe. That’s no coincidence.

The European Union puts a lot of resources into the data infrastructure that supports smart city initiatives, from urban mobility to low emission zones to IoT-backed tourism.

Specifically, the EU is working toward persistent, secure, and equitable ecosystems for the data that powers smart cities. In fact, the European strategy for data defines nine areas in which to pool equally accessible data: the Common European Data Spaces.

OM: Muscat Municipality spotlights Smart City initiatives

Muscat Municipality is participating in COMEX 2024 with a strong focus on its ongoing efforts to transform Muscat into a "Smart and Sustainable City," aligning with its comprehensive digital transformation strategy.

Its booth features an extensive range of digital services designed to simplify and streamline transactions for citizens and residents. These services, part of a broader initiative to enhance electronic readiness and leverage modern information technologies, aim to eliminate the need for physical visits to administrative offices, thereby improving the overall quality of life in Muscat.

State Services Minister Trevor Mallard says government agencies will be encouraged to share more IT infrastructure, after setting a precedent last week by obliging core departments to sign up to e-procurement system GoProcure. Mr Mallard added a footnote to the sacred public sector mantra of chief executive accountability by mandating 37 core departments use and pay for GoProcure as a transaction hub for the purchase of goods and services from suppliers.

This followed muted interest from departments in volunteering to pioneer the system, which will be built by multinational Cap Gemini Ernst & Young at a cost of up to $7.5 million.

Mr Mallard says moves to share IT infrastructure between groups of departments or across government are likely to be given added impetus by the Government's "Review of the Centre", which involves re-examining the structure of public service delivery. This shouldn't be portrayed as "a big Stalinist change", he says.

Shared initiatives could involve creating new physical government "store-front" arrangements, providing access to government services from a single location. Computing capacity could also be shared by departments, he says.

E-government Unit head Brendan Boyle says the GoProcure mandate sets an important precedent, but doesn't spell the end of decentralised IT decision-making by departments.

While all transactions will have to go through GoProcure's Oracle Exchange hub, departments will be free to buy their own requisitioning software to manage internal processes such as authorising purchases and acknowledging the receipt of goods, or else use GoProcure's requisitioning tool, Oracle iProcurement.

Police and the Defence Force already have their own requisitioning software supplied by German company SAP.

Police national procurement manager Stan Pope says there will be limited efficiency gains, if any, routing supplier transactions through GoProcure rather than the police's existing SAP Enterprise Buyer software. But he says GoProcure should help central agencies get an all-of-government view of spending and there could be benefits in police accessing centrally-stored catalogues.

He supports Mr Mallard mandating its use – an approach Mr Pope says could usefully be extended to some other IT infrastructure.
