A major E-Government Procurement (E-GP) project meant to enhance the country’s procurement processes and block the financial loopholes in the system will begin from January next year.

The project, which will begin as a pilot, is expected to also enhance transparency in the public procurement process; provide a common platform for use by public institutions in public procurement and public financial management; and enhance competition by facilitating increased participation of service providers for government contracts.

The future of this country depends on its willingness to harness the new information and communication technologies to advance its development, President of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) Dr. Osei Kofi Dankwa has said.

“A nation unable to join this new economic order, unable to harness the power of ICT, is effectively locked out of the new global economy and forced to remain a marginal player on the world economic stage.

The Caretaker Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Sherry Aryittey has disclosed that government is in the process of adopting the use of technology in healthcare delivery especially in rural areas.

The E-Health system, according to the Minister will facilitate the efficient and prompt delivery of health care without compromising on quality.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will this year introduce biometric identity cards which will be issued instantly at the point of registration to subscribers.

It would also start work on piloting electronic claims (E-claims) processing and host an extended stakeholder review of the capitation pilot in the Ashanti Region to inform its improvement and the subsequent nationwide rollout of this provider payment method.

The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester A. Mensah, disclosed this when he addressed members of the core management team of the NHIS and some key stakeholders at a management retreat held at Elmina in the Central Region.

The deadline for the implementation of the e-Ghana project meant to assist the government to generate growth and employment by leveraging ICT and public-private partnerships to develop the IT Enabled Services industry in the country has been extended until June 30 next year.

The US$84.7 million which was awarded in August 2006 was also meant to contribute to improved efficiency and transparency of selected government functions through e-government applications.
