A DECADE of work and hundreds of millions of rand will be required before all government information and services are made available online.

The e-government initiative has been talked about for years as a vision for enabling every citizen to apply for services without filling in reams of paperwork, waiting in queues or being shunted from office to office. But the more that government explores the initiative, the more work it uncovers.

Government is falling short of its target of allocating 30% of its national IT spend to black economic empowerment (BEE) companies. This was revealed by Mojalefa Moseki, CIO for the State IT Agency (SITA), who was speaking last night at a First Tuesday presentation on e-government.

The Western Cape government has launched its Cape Gateway as part of its e-government strategy aimed at cutting red tape and promoting the province's call centre credentials.

The regional government says the Cape Gateway project is the first of its kind in the country. It includes a walk-in centre where members of the public can have free Internet access to various provincial government sites and a call centre outsourced to British-owned firm Dialogue.

The Western Cape administration and Telkom have launched a one-stop information centre in a bid to make government information more accessible.

The centre, called the Cape Gateway Contact and Walk-in Centre, is part of the provincial administration's online strategy and is expected to improve service delivery in all departments.
