Information and communication technology (ICT) partnerships were explored during a key visit yesterday.

A delegation from Japan Information Technology Service Industry Association (JISA) visited the eGovernment Authority (eGA).

It was organised by the Economic Development Board and Bahrain-Japan Friendship Society.

Efforts to strengthen Bahrain’s digital economy will begin in earnest next year when the kingdom launches a major upgrade of its broadband internet infrastructure.

Bahrain plans to roll out a new fibre optic cable network over a four-year period, boosting its already robust IT infrastructure and paving the way for expansion in segments with high-growth potential, such as e-commerce. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which will oversee the initiative, said it aimed to ensure 80% of the population had access to the service by 2018.

Implementing the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister; as well as resuming the Coordinating Committee's Plan, eight governmental entities recently joined the National Suggestions and Complaints System 'Tawasul', bringing the number of entities which receive the public's suggestions, inquiries and complaints electronically through 'Tawasul' to 21 entities.

Ministry of Works (MoW)’s Information Technology Director Hisham Sater revealed that the number of users for the Ministry’s 11 electronic services reached 10,652 users during the first half of 2014.

The services can be accessed through both the Ministry’s portal www.works.gov.bh, and the eGovernment portal www.bahrain.bh.

According to Sater, the statistics revealed that the Materials Testing Results Services targeted the highest number of users; with 9863 users, after which came the Material/Product Assessment eService with 250 users, and then the Report of Road Fault with 234 users.

Bahrain ranked 18 among the 25 world e-government leaders with very high e-government development index (EGDI) in 2014. Bahrain is the only GCC member on the index, said the Minister for Transportation, Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed. The country ranked first among the Arab nations in this sector, he said and commended the role of the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Council for ICT (SCICT), Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, in the leadership extended to the development of the ICT sector.

The deputy prime minister in cooperation with many other ministries is ensuring that the e-government principles are implemented in the ministries.
