Microsoft Corporation India and Hughes will work together to roll out 5,000 broadband-enabled Information and Communication Technology (ICT) kiosks under a rural computing initiative called Project Saksham. The kiosks will be deployed across 200 small towns and rural regions in India and will be operated on a franchisee basis. The targeted applications are e-commerce, education and e-governance.

NREGAsoft, software of the ministry of rural development to monitor the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) across the country, has bagged the Microsoft e-governance award 2006.

This software, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), makes available every minute detail about implementation of the NREGA online.

The Chairman of the National Knowledge Commission said that E-governance is the key focus area for the Commission.

The National Knowledge Commission will recommend setting up web portals on 10 topics and GIS mapping of the country, said Chairman, National Knowledge Commission, Sam Pitroda at an Open House Session organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry on Wednesday.

The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh has become the first Indian company to file tax returns online.

BSP, the flagship unit of the government-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), filed the first ever online tax returns of Rs.100,001 to the Chhattisgarh government here Monday.

For the first time in the country, in a significant e-Governance initiative, the Commercial Taxes Department of Chhattisgarh has launched the facility for trade and industry for filing 'online’ returns as well as taxes like Value Added Tax ( VAT), Central Sales Tax and Entry tax through e-Return and e-Challan.

Finance secretary DS Mishra told Hindustan Times that Chhattisgarh is the first state in the country to introduce 'online e-returns facility'.
