  • GH: Dodome raises funds to complete ICT centre

    The Dodome-Doglome and Dodome-Awuiasu communities on Saturday raised an amount of GHc10,100.00 towards the completion of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre for the local Junior High School estimated at about GHc50,000.

    The fund-raising was done at a joint durbar to climax this year’s traditional Yam Festival celebrations under the theme, “The significance of ICT Education in contemporary Ghana-the role of the citizen.”

    The event marked the resumption of co-operation between Dodome-Doglome and Dodome-Awuiasu communities in marshalling resources for development after 25 years of suspension.

  • GH: Don't rush for new passports - Deputy Minister

    The Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, on Wednesday urged Ghanaians not to rush to obtain new the biometric passports introduced by the government. He said there was a considerable time frame available for phasing out of the old passports.

    Mr Opoku gave the advice at the inauguration of the new biometric passport processing centre in Sunyani. The biometric passport contains personal data in an electronic form including scanned photograph and the finger prints of the applicant. Mr Opoku said the increasing cases of impersonation, identity fraud, forgery and embezzlement among others necessitated the new security features in passport.

  • GH: Don’t stampede EC to implement biometric voting'

    Dr. Michael Kpesa Whyte, a Fellow of the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ghana, has warned that there could be dire consequences for the nation should individuals and interest groups pressurise the Electoral Commission into implementing biometric voting for the 2012 elections.

    “We should not rush them into doing things that will cost the nation...Come election day, if we don’t take time we might actually plunge the country into total chaos and confusion, if we only depended solely on [the biometric voting]” he told Joy News on Friday.

  • GH: Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority issues 19,818 biometric driver's licenses in twin city

    The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued 19,818 biometric driver's licenses in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis since its inception in 2008.

    The Western Regional Licensing Officer of the DVLA, Mr Godson Wemegah, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Takoradi on Tuesday.

    The Regional Licensing Officer said the biometric license is intended to check unscrupulous people from selling fake licenses to unsuspecting drivers as well as standardizing the registration of drivers.

  • GH: E-Gov’t procurement system begins next year

    A major e-Government Procurement (E-GP) project meant to enhance the country’s procurement processes and block the financial loopholes in the system will begin from January next year.

    The project, which will begin as a pilot, is expected to also enhance transparency in the public procurement process; provide a common platform for use by public institutions in public procurement and public financial management; and enhance competition by facilitating increased participation of service providers for government contracts.

  • GH: E-governance platform launched to enhance service delivery

    The country's e-governance platform has been launched in Accra.

    Eleven services of the government, which includes application for Police reports, certified true copy of birth certificates, and National ID cards can now be applied for on-line.

  • GH: E-Government Infrastructure Project To Commence

    The Ministry of Communications will soon commence implementation of the e-government infrastructure project to provide a national network for Ministries, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.

    Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Communications Minister, who announced this, said, the focus of the project will be to provide a shared and secured interoperability of government IT architecture to ensure that, IT platforms is more effectively unified, managed and aligned to provide better support for Government applications.

    He said, the Ministry in its bid to protect vital and confidential Government and public sector information is constructing a national data centre to which the national portal will be linked on completion.

  • GH: e-Government Network To Connect Public Schools

    The Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr. Attuquaye Armah, says the e-Government network infrastructure will soon be put in place to ride on the national communication fibre backbone to connect all public and educational institutions and district assembles.

    The infrastructure, he said, would facilitate the provision of last mile solutions by the private sector to ensure a complete network infrastructure and provide adequate bandwidth capacity for e-services.

  • GH: E-Government Project To Take Off Next Month

    The e-governance project which is in collaboration with the Registrar-General’s Department (RGD) of the Ministry of Justice and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is scheduled to take off next month.

    The project seeks to capture data provided by any of the revenue agencies to be shared online by the collaborating agencies and ensure online business registration.

    This was made known by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Hon. Martin A.B.K. Amidu during the Ministry’s turn at the Meet the Press series held in Accra today.

    A two-day e-government workshop to deliberate on digital economy programmes has opened in Accra to foster government approach to e-government implementation in Ghana.

    Organised by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the workshop also seeks to ensure collaboration and raise national awareness as well as understanding of stakeholder responsibilities in its implementation.

  • GH: E-Voting System at University of Cape Coast 2011 SRC Elections

    Students of the University of Cape Coast have shown that with the appropriate measures, Ghana could successfully begin using the electronic system of voting to end the perpetual allegations of vote rigging and post-election violence.

    The students demonstrated this when they used the E-voting system during their 2011 SRC elections which unlike previous years ended without any post-election controversies.

  • GH: E/R registers 1.4 million people under biometric registration exercise

    A total of 1.433,054 people were registered in the just ended biometric registration exercise in the Eastern Region against the estimated figure of 1,447,149.

    The Deputy Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Osei Bonsu, disclosed this at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council meeting in Koforidua, on Friday.

    He said the Kwaebibirim District recorded the highest number of registered voters with a figure of 119427, whilst Upper Manya District recorded the lowest figure of 35,589.

  • GH: Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic Broadband Infrastructure Project Commences

    Government, in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and Alcatel-Lucent, is facilitating the development of a Fibre Optic Backbone Infrastructure on the country’s Eastern Corridor to support the deployment of the national e-Government Network.

    The Eastern Corridor Project, stretching nearly 600 kilometres from Ho in the Volta region to Bawku in the Upper East region, will be linked to the existing network in other parts of the country and facilitate network access to 27 District and Municipal Assemblies and surrounding communities.

  • GH: Eastern Region starts biometric registration of NHIS clients

    The Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says the biometric registration of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) clients started in the region on Wednesday.

    The project was started in four districts including New Juaben, Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo and Asuogyaman districts.

  • GH: EC adopts mobile checking of voter registration details

    The Electoral Commission has intensified efforts at making Election 2012 credible, transparent, free and fair with the introduction of the SMS technology to facilitate the checking of biometric details during the Voter Exhibition period.

    Information obtained by the Ghana News Agency on Saturday indicates that the EC SMS platform seeks to expand registered voters access to the Provisional Voters Register through their mobile handsets at the lowest possible network rates.

  • GH: EC attempt to justify voting without biometric verification backfires

    Obvious attempts by the Lawyers of the Electoral Commission to justify the widespread occurrence of voting without biometric verification, earlier today, backfired badly as the main witness for the petitioners, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, proved that the apparent justification could not stand the test of the facts behind the case.

    On his second day of cross examining Dr. Bawumia, Counsel Quarshie-Idun sought to rationalize the occurrence of voting without biometric verification by suggesting that the law and reality meant that certain persons like the disabled were exempt from biometric verification. This ostensibly was to pave way for the EC to justify the over 535,000 people who according to evidence on the face of the pink sheets were allowed to vote across the country without going through biometric verification.

  • GH: EC creates 2,000 new polling stations for biometric registration

    The Electoral Commission has announced the creation of 2,000 new polling stations across the country to augment the existing ones as well as ease the long wait in queues. This would bring the total number of polling stations in the country to 23,000.

    The Electoral Commission announced this when it met with its district officers in preparation for the biometric registration exercise which would be undertaken soon.

    The Electoral Commission told Citi News in an interview after the pilot run of the biometric exercise that the entire exercise was successful.

  • GH: EC ready for biometric registration

    The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has announced the date for the commencement of the much-anticipated biometric voter registration ahead of the elections in December.

    Speaking at a media encounter to brief journalists on the EC’s preparedness for the exercise, the EC boss gave the assurance that the biometric register will be ready for use in the December polls.

  • GH: EC records 12,000 to 15,000 double registration

    The Electoral Commission (EC) recorded between 12, 000 to 15,000 multiple registrations at the end of the biometric voter registration exercise, Mr. Safo Kantanka, Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Finance and Administration has said.

    He said the EC was still compiling the registration figures nationwide and also cross checking to find out areas of multiple registration and accidental multiple registrations.

    Mr. Safo Kantanka said this at the opening of a one-day workshop in Koforidua on Thursday, to educate political party executives on the in-built integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.
