  • GH: EPA introduces biometric registration device

    The newly appointed Management of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced a biometric registration device to instill discipline in its employees.

    Mrs. Angelina Mensah, the Chief Programme Officer in-charge-of Public Affairs, tld the GNA in an interview that the device was officially inaugurated at their premises last week.

    She said employees' altitude to work remained embarrassing and unproductive and so management found it prudent and relevant to adopt such a technique to curb the indiscipline among employees.

  • GH: Forum on E-Governance Launched

    As part of the pragmatic efforts to transform Ghana into an information-rich knowledge-based society, Media Response, in collaboration with First Digital Television and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), yesterday launched the e-Governance Forum in Accra.

    Anchored on the theme, “Enhancing Citizen Participation in the e-Governance Process”, the platform has been created to educate the public, create awareness and enhance citizen’s participation in the e-governance transformation process in Ghana.

    Inmates OF 21 prisons centres in the country can now enjoy the luxury of learning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as part of their reformative process.

    This follows the establishment of computer centres at the 21 prisons outlets to enable inmates, especially those who willingly want to study computer and its related courses, to do so.

  • GH: GISPA holds workshop for Internet service providers

    A Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr George Andah, has urged independent Internet service providers (ISPs) to inter-operate to boost efficiency in their operations, in line with the government’s agenda to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a tool to promote socio-economic development.

    “We are insisting that service providers provide easy access to the Internet which cuts across the quality of service experience, access and affordability, in line with the policy direction of the Ministry of Communications. It is imbedded in their licence and we are not going to compromise on that,“ he said.

    As part of national agenda to aggressively expand infrastructure and also to accelerate ICT education to enhance the delivery of quality education in Primary and Junior High Schools across the country Government has given a very big boost to education in the Ga East Municipality with the provision of a multi-purpose library facility.

    The two-storey facility forms part of government’s drive to achieving the Goal Two of the Millennium Development Goals; of achieving universal primary education.

  • GH: Government committed to broadband infrastructural development - Prez

    President John Daramani Mahama on Thursday pledged the government's readiness to continuously promote the rapid development of broadband infrastructure to reach all parts of the country to ensure that improved connectivity provided better access to health care and health information.

    He said improved broad Information Communication Technology would also improve opportunities for education and training, transportation, protection of environment and management of natural resources, and to support E-government to create transparency in government.

  • GH: Government to distribute 400,000 laptops to schools and students

    Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Communications, said on Tuesday the government would in two years distribute 400,000 laptops to schools and students to help empower students in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

    Dr Boamah said this at the 5th ICT Conference of the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Accra on Tuesday.

    The three day conference is on the theme: "Mobile Service that empowers vulnerable communities" and 350 participants from five continents were taking part in the conference.

  • GH: Government urged to resource teacher training colleges

    Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso of the Centre for International Affairs at the University of Ghana, Legon, has called on the Government to resource teachers and the Colleges of Education with the needed logistics.

    He said this would help promote quality teaching and learning in the country, since education was the bedrock of the nation's development.

    "Teachers, who impart the needed knowledge to future leaders of the nation, should adequately be supplied with the needed teaching and learning materials, including computers, to enhance the teaching of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools," he said.

  • GH: Government’s e-payment system receives positive response

    Minister of Communications Dr. Edward Omane Boamah says government’s shared e-payment being piloted by 12 selected Metropolitan and Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) has received an overwhelmingly positive response.

    Speaking at the opening of the first e-Commerce Expo, Dr. Omane Boamah said introduction of the e-system shows government to e-commerce has already rolled-out a set of e-services which include web content management, e-Forms and Document Work Flow.

  • GH: ICT help reduce maternal mortality in the Northern Region

    Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is being used to educate pregnant women on their health throughout their gestation period to help reduce maternal mortality in the Northern Region.

    It is being carried out by Savana Signatures (Savsign), a non-governmental Organisation (NGO), operating in the region.

    Mr Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director of Savsign, who announced these, said the NGO would use multi-media technology, voice and SMS messages to educate pregnant women on daily basis on what they were expected to do, their diets and general information to inform their health decisions.

    Mr Paarock Vanpercy, Director General of the National Communications Authority, says the promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool for development, must embrace all genders.

    He said even though ICT has become a lucrative sector in terms of job creation, business growth and rewards, career in ICT had somehow become mainly dominated by males.

    Mr Vanpercy made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Mrs Florence Martey, NCA Deputy Engineer, at a "Girls in ICT" Marathon training programme on Wednesday in Accra.

  • GH: Invest more in ICT training - Ato Dadzie

    Nana Ato Dadzie, a Former Chief of Staff, has said there is the need for the country to invest substantially in the establishment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) institutions to support the Oil and Gas sector.

    He said it was high time the country looked at other areas of educational training within, rather than sending Ghanaians abroad to be trained as oil and gas experts.

  • GH: KIA to introduce electronic gate systems next month

    Ten electronic gate (E-gate) systems for automated border control will be operationalised at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in February this year.

    The e-migration system, which forms part of a bigger e-migration initiative by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), is meant to enhance security clearance procedures and passenger processing.

    President of Celltel Networks Limited has revealed that Tema is a wealthy city in its own right; “it has the largest harbour in the country, a well-planned city, industries, the majority of quality workers in Ghana, and the Greenwich, among others".

    Dr. Prince Kofi Kludjeson who is Celltel Networks Limited President indicated that his company was discussing with officials how to effectively change Tema into a smart city, stating that very ancient structures might be transformed into modern ones and that every home must have wifi and other modern stuff.

    Dr Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications on Friday urged students to take the study of Information and Communication Technology seriously to improve the quality of their educational pursuit.

    He said the Ministry is committed to improve access to ICT across the country and pursue its vision of promoting a viable integrated national development process within the global setting.

    Mr Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Information and Media Relations (MOIMR) on Friday said the Ministry has rolled out programmes to boost the performance of Public Relations Officers (PROs) in the various ministries and departments to deliver government business.

    The programmes are directed at building the capacity of the officers to enhance greater efficiency and coordination in delivering government programmes and policies.

  • GH: Most Govt Agencies Not Hooked To eService

    Several government departments have not been connected to the Ghana Government Online Services Project (eServices) to deliver Government services to the public because of a lack of e-service portals.

    Among these are the Ministries of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Employment and Labour Relations as well as Water Resources, Works and Housing.

  • GH: MP donates computers to Krachi Nchumuru District

    Mr John Majisi, National Democratic Congress, Member of Parliament (MP) for Krachi Nchumuru, has donated 25 computers and 1,000 exercise books to the Krachi Nchumuru District Directorate of Education in the Volta Region.

    The computers were secured from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, at the request of Mr Majisi to facilitate the teaching and learning of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the district.

  • GH: NCCT urged to focus more on ICT Development

    Bayelsa State Government on Monday urged the National Council of Communication Technology (NCCT) to focus more on the development of Information Communication Technology (ICT) local content towards strengthening ICT infrastructure across the country.

    Governor Seriake Dickson stated this in Yenagoa, while declaring open, the 3rd regular meeting of the NCCT, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and the Bayelsa State Government with the theme, “Mainstreaming ICT in National Development: Moving from Talk to Action.”

  • GH: NIA $1.22 Billion Registration Project: Completely Unreasonable

    In the face of the country’s noble quest to have every Ghanaian registered and provided a National ID card, we woke up on Wednesday to the news that the National Identification Authority [NIA], the outfit responsible will spend a whopping $1.22billion for the exercise.

    Among other things, the DG of NIA, Prof Ken Attafuah said, the 15 years project is hinged on a “design-build-operate-transfer” agreement which will see both government and the private partner make some financial commitments. The private partners share of this burden is $678 million, the government of Ghana component, $531 million,” making up the $1.22billion.
