  • PMO Online Paves Way For Paperless Brunei

    Top officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) yesterday attended a short training course to learn the usage and application of a new online system - the PMO Online.

    PMO Online is expected to soon become an integral part of work life at the Prime Minister’s Office in line with the government's initiative to create a 'paperless office', the Permanent Secretaries of the Attending the training were PMO officials, including deputies and Senior Administrative Officers.

  • Poll: Brunei bests Indonesia, Philippines in IT readiness

    Brunei has bested Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia among Southeast Asian countries surveyed for their readiness in using information communication technologies, according to a poll by the World Economic Forum.

    According to the Global Information Technology report, Brunei retained its ranking from last year at 63 out of 133 countries outranking the other three Southeast Asian countries.

  • Promoting e-government in Brunei

    Around thirty IT experts from ministries, BIT, government offices and private sector attended the I-Tea@UBD: Strategic approach to e-government forum yesterday afternoon at University of Brunei Darussalam.

    The forum was held to promote and enhance awareness in e-government for the region, with specific focus given to discussions relating to some of the success stories in Singapore and their contributing factors.

  • Renewed ICT collaboration between Brunei and Singapore

    The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the government IT agencies of both countries, have renewed their collaboration and technical cooperation on telecommunication regulatory areas.

    The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Project Addendum (PA) to further leverage on their existing cooperation framework and cover new areas on corporate services and human resource development, postal services, domain name registration and an industrial internship programme for fresh graduates and students undertaking ICT-related diploma courses.

  • Royal Brunei Police Force To Automate Manual Processes With New System

    As part of the e-Government project under RKN 9, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBAF) are venturing into an Advance Records Management System at a cost of $3,958,000. It is due to be completed in 12 months.

    The signing ceremony between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam represented by SAC Hj Majid bin Hj Awang Damit and Mr Louis Lim Ching Tong, Director of Administration and Finance, representing ITIS Wescot Technology Sdn Bhd, was held yesterday at the RBAF Headquarters in Gadong.

  • Senior Brunei Government Officers On Study Visit To Singapore

    In a bid to improve public management within Brunei Darussalam, the Institute for Leadership, Innovation & Advancement (ILIA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam, will be conducting regional study missions to Singapore as part of the curriculum for the Executive Development Programme for Senior Government Officers (EDPSGO) for 2010.

    Twenty-seven participants comprising senior government officers left for Singapore yesterday for the five-day study mission. According to a press release from the Singapore High Commission, the Bruneian officers will be briefed by the relevant Singapore agencies on various topics such as the changing landscape in education and healthcare, e-Government, human resource management within the public service, public-private partnership, urban planning and development, environmental protection and sustainable development, and new strategies to cope with an ageing population.

  • Skills Development, Private-Public Partners Vital For Brunei ICT Growth

    Brunei's ICT industry is foreseen to grow further during the next few years, subject to proper collaboration efforts, local companies’ inICTiative to expand and the nurturing of local ICT skills and expertise.

    At a dialogue session between the Prime Minister's Office and the local ICT industry held yesterday, Pengiran DP Ismail Mohamed, permanent secretary of the Prime Minister's Office told The Brunei Times that though local ICT companies could build upon opportunICTies offered through the E-government inICTiative, companies need to also play a role and be more proactive in achieving growth through other areas.

  • Steps Need To Be Taken To Improve Brunei's E-Government

    The development of Brunei Darussalam's e-Government will not be effective if the Sultanate continues to see "reluctant growth" in Information Technology (IT).

    This observation was made by Legislative Council member, Yang Berhormat (YB) Dato Paduka Awang Haji Idris bin Haji Abas, during the 7th Legislative Council session yesterday.

    Reiterating the importance of embracing Information Communications Technology (ICT), he noted that the IT industry could be classified as one of the industries that contribute towards the Sultanate's economic development.

  • Ties Between Brunei, Korea Lauded

    Bilateral trade between Brunei Darussalam and the Republic of Korea surpassed US$1 billion last year, according to Korean Ambassador My Hwng Won Kon who spoke during last night's dinner reception to mark the National Foundation Day of Korea at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

    It is hoped that once the free trade agreement comes into force, bilateral trade between the two countries will continue to he diversified and expanded, the Korean ambassador added.

    This was said by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof in a pre-recorded video aired live during the ASEAN Smart City Development Cooperation Forum in Seoul, Korea yesterday.

  • Towards Strengthening Brunei-India Cooperation In ICT

    Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who is also the chairman of AiTi, underscored that the Interactive Workshop on Optimising ICT Brunei India Cooperation yesterday was a significant milestone in the Brunei-India ICT Cooperation following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in ICT on May 22, 2008 in New Delhi, India.

    "I was made to understand that today's event was built upon an India-Brunei ICT panel discussion held last month on the scope and potential for cooperation in ICT between our two countries including ways in which India and Brunei can work together in further developing our respective ICT industries."

  • Universiti Brunei Darussalam launch e-Hijrah to improve the quality of education

    E-Hijrah focuses on both the structural elements of ICT, such as devices and networks, and the essence of ICT which is to improve the quality of education from improving learning opportunities to making the Ministry more efficient. The Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong stressed the matter in his keynote address at the launch of the e-Hijrah initiative, this afternoon.

  • Universiti Brunei Darussalam To Set Up Research Centre To Speed Up E-Govt

    Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday signed with a South Korean institute an agreement to establish a joint research centre here eyed to expedite the Sultanate's e-government initiative.

    The planned "UBD-Kaist E-Government Innovation Centre" is expected to be established soon in UBD and will provide objective views and capacity-building programmes to push Brunei's e-government agenda, said Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology's (Kaist) Director of eGovernment and Green IT Research Centre (KeGRC).

    Brunei's civil service will be the first to undergo such training programmes on e-government to be provided by the new centre.

  • Virtual Brunei Online For Paperless Sultanate

    Brunei is bracing up to pave the way for "Virtual Brunei Online" in its drive to establish a nationwide e-Government initiative that would eventually promote Brunei and attract benefits.

    This was stated by Professor Jim Tam, who was speaking during an ICT seminar on the issues of implementation of e-Government at ICTC, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday.

  • Want To Develop E-Govt? Use Facebook, Twitter, Brunei Told

    The Brunei government should capitalise on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to reach out to the people in the country's drive to promote and develop e-government, a United Nations e-government expert said here yesterday.

    Richard Kerby, the inter-regional adviser on e-Government and Knowledge Management for the e-Government branch of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, explained that getting on social networking platforms will help the government connect with the media-savvy masses, especially the younger generation.

    This, he said, would work alongside maintaining existing national online portals, where e-services are provided.

  • Why is Brunei Lagging in E-govt?

    "Weak" change management and "chronic" shortage of human resources need to be overcome in Brunei's journey towards achieving an effective e-government, said the deputy permanent secretary (IT and E-Government).

    Hj Azhar Hj Ahmad, who also holds the post of Overall Government Chief Information Officer (CIO), said that in terms of e-government, change management was an "underestimated risk".

    "We have seen the results of weak change management in the implementation of projects, such as weak adoption by end-users. The root of this really comes from weak adoption of project management discipline," he highlighted during an open forum discussing e-government at the THiNKBIG Technology Forum on Thursday.
