While billions of people are 'connected', a large number is still not enjoying the benefits of internet, which is a basic right in the modern age, experts said during the 60th general meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

In his opening address, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) director-general Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori noted more than 90 per cent of the UAE population uses internet. And the UAE top in smartphone penetrations with over 80 per cent of the total population as users.

UAE’s TRA boss stresses importance of 4th Industrial revolution

Internet-based artificial intelligence and industrial revolution will play a crucial role in the UAE’s future development, a top official said here on Monday.

“Internet was the ideal leverage for development of the UAE in the past. Likewise, internet-based artificial intelligence and fourth industrial revolution will play similar role in the future,” said Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, the director-general of Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) said at a conference in the capital.

Don't be surprised if all government service centres are closed on Thursday, October 26. This day has been set as 'A Day Without Service Centres' by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

But, government services are still in full swing, albeit only online. This means that more than 950 government services from 33 public entities and a number of private sector entities, in more than 100 governmental service centres, will be delivered on October 26 through smart channels only (see box for participating entities).

As Gitex Technology Week 2017 drew to a close on Thursday, experts across various sectors noted that it was imperative that companies set digital objectives for themselves in an increasingly technological world.

Smart Dubai, which has long held synergistic and cooperative relationships with a diverse spectrum of Dubai Government bodies and private companies, showcased a wide variety of new innovations and tech at its pavilion during the event. As many as 50 public and private entities highlighted upwards of 200 innovative smart services that tap cutting-edge Fourth-Industrial-Revolution technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality. The exhibits reflected the six key objectives of the Smart Dubai Plan 2021, including smart living, smart environment, smart mobility, and smart governance.
