Officers and employees in each department can access this information according to their respective areas of operation, which will be instrumental in facilitating data editing and report generation.

  • IN: New Delhi: City mapped, database to be used from Aug 1

The capital has about 48 lakh buildings, 3 lakh manholes and nearly 17,000 kilometres of running road length. All this information is part of the extensive database that captures the demographics of the capital and utilities like stormwater drains, sewer lines, infrastructure projects and urban planning details under Delhi State Spatial Database. Starting August 1, all state departments and civic agencies have to mandatorily access, use and share information through secured communication networks under the Delhi Geographical Spatial Data Infrastructure (Management, Control, Administration, Security and Safety), Act 2011.

The Act has been notified by the office of the lieutenant-governor, Tejendra Khanna, and is aimed at ensuring effective e-governance. The database provides a ground-based actual information system that details infrastructure and utilities above ground, on the ground and below the ground up to 12 feet with maps. It spans 1500 square kilometres of the capital.

  • IN: Odisha: GIS-based Data to Speed up Planning

Collation of spatial (longitudinal and latitudinal) data and remote sensing would play a key role in development of mineral-rich and agriculture-based States. Resources such as minerals, land and water bodies can be identified at ease through global information system (GIS) mapping, said Chief Executive of Odisha Space Application Centre (OSRAC) Sandeep Tripathy.

Speaking on the significance of Odisha State Data Policy here on Monday, Tripathy said GIS-based information will speed up planning and decision making process. It would also prevent duplication of assets on records. After implementation of the policy, the State would have digitised information on its wastelands, forests, water bodies and mineral bearing areas, he added.

  • IN: Redeeming the future of our cities through GIS

In Maharashtra, a township that is spread over 10,000 acres is being developed with the objective of striking a balance between cosmopolitan architecture and environmentally friendly surroundings. The master plan has already won the Award for Excellence 2005, given by the Congress for New Urbanism (USA) and the American Society of Landscape Architects Award, 2005. One of the salient features of this city is the use of GIS technology at the earliest possible stages of design, planning, and construction.

The Indian government, in its 10 point agenda, has emphasised on infrastructure development. Providing excellent infrastructure—modern, clean and sustainable cities; a cutting-edge railway network; new age ports; good roads, 24×7 electricity and water is a top priority for the government. Owing to rapid urbanisation and the growing population, our metros and tier 1 cities are already under significant ‘resource’ pressure. However, this is also a tremendous opportunity for cities like Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Pune, Ludhiana, who have emerged as destinations for doing business.

The BWSSB has been working on the GIS for the last seven years. So far, the board has updated all details covering the 229 sq km of the core city and is in process of dovetailing the GIS with revenue billing, employee database and other details. According to the BWSSB officials, the data related to the newly added areas of the city would be updated in the GIS by 2011. GIS performs four kinds of operations — data integration, data storage, data processing and data outputs. Data processing includes data viewing, data querying, data crossover and spatial analysis.
