  • India: Kerala Gets First Active Web GIS

Kerala's first Active Web GIS (Geographic Information System) has been developed using Free and Open Source Software; the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) has launched the system for use by the public. The idea is to make important geographical information available in a simple Web interface, which responds to user interactions.

In short, a GIS makes it possible to know what's going on where, or what the physical state and other properties of a particular location are at a given point in time.

  • India: Kerala: Free software powers this GIS

The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala, here, an institute under the State government, has announced the launch of the State’s first Active Web Geographical Information System (GIS) service in public domain using free and open source software technology.

Announcing the launch here on Saturday, K.R. Srivathsan, Director of the institute, said publication and distribution of spatial data were becoming increasingly important for scientific and business organisations to make smart decisions.

  • India: Need for single network of GIS: Himachal Pradesh Government

Laying stress on information sharing both by the government and public, the Himachal Pradesh government today said that the ultimate vision is to have a single network of Geographical Information System.

The state government is the single largest service provider to the citizens, a map based e-governance which is the most effective technology includes spatially referenced data base, Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Asha Swaroop said while presiding over the inaugural session of the one-day workshop on 'GIS', an official release said.

  • India: NKC for setting up web portals, GIS mapping: Sam Pitroda

  • Indian state Kerala to use GIS for water loss reduction

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is exploring the use of GIS to map out water and sewage pipelines in the State of approximately 33 million residents to better manage leakage points and maximise revenue.

According to a recent report by KWA’s Non-Revenue Water Management (NRWM) division in Kochi, the most densely populated city in Kerala with a population of over 600,000, only half of the total drinking water produced at the Aluva water treatment plant reaches the public.

  • Indian villages can now be mapped too!

Until a few months back, Puduvayal village in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, was just another quaint village in the country that was invisible in the virtual world.

Today, the click of a mouse can reveal even its tiniest of details — population data, number and kinds of factories here, the raw material available in this area and the kind of industries it can support, tourist spots (the location of the 15th century Veerasegara temple can be found here). All thanks to students D Karthikk, R Meenakshi and P K Madhumathi, from A C College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi, who created this website.

  • Indonesia launches geoportal for disaster mitigation

The Geospatial Information Agency, formerly known as the National Coordinating Agency for Surveys and Mapping or BAKOSURTANAL, launched an interactive map called “Ina-GeoPortal” which aims to assist public sector organisations in their disaster mitigation and environmental conservation efforts.

The Ina-GeoPortal will give government agencies and the general public real time access to authoritative spatial information on areas that are prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods.

  • Indonesia promotes use of GIS for economic development

The Ministry for Development of Disadvantaged Regions is working together with the Geospatial Information Agency (formerly known as BAKOSURTANAL) to support the development of several key sectors and industries in some of the country’s most disadvantaged areas.

The initiative stemmed from the national government’s master plan for the acceleration and expansion of economic development throughout the entire Indonesian Territory.

  • Introduction of specialized GIS offered for Emergencies Ministry, army and police of Azerbaijan

Baku hosts seminar on introduction of geographic information systems (GIS) in the e-government projects.

The seminar was organized on the initiative of the Ministry of Communications & IT (MCIT) with support of company Integris. At the seminar Integris and Data+ presented solutions to automate collection, processing and accounting of analytical information about accidents and branch-wise GIS. They pointed to the possibility of using such systems in environmental research, mapping, agriculture, road construction, disaster management, health care, communications, statistics, trade, urban planning, inventory systems, tourism, military and police activity.

  • Iraqi Kurdistan Celebrates GIS Day

Attended by ministers, foreign consulates, IT experts and average citizens, Kurdistan celebrated the GIS day on Monday, joining 59 other nations who value the importance of GIS, an umbrella tool that provides information about where people and things are in the real world.

As it was the first time to celebrate this day here in the northern region of Iraq, for many it was even the first time hearing the word. The clueless audience was listening with curiosity as presentations including basic and more detailed information about how GIS can change and improve their lives were shown.

  • Ireland: Government launches geographic data portal

The Government has created an online portal that will allow the public to search multiple spatial databases for geographic mapping data held by a number of different departments.

The Irish Spatial Data Exchange (ISDE) will operate as an inter-departmental and cross-agency online service that will allow the public to search multiple databases.

It will also be a vital service for the construction industry, geologists, students, archaeologists, researchers and businesspeople alike.

  • Ireland: Mapping the land

Anyone who has used Google Earth will have been mightily impressed by the browser-based technology that allows you to choose virtually any point on Earth and then zoom into a particular country, city and even street in just a few seconds. The same principle lies behind a new government-to-business (G2B) service from Land Registry — Landdirect.ie — which is due to go live on 28 April.

By visiting Landdirect.ie, professional users such as banks, solicitors, estate agents, local authorities and government departments will be able to pick out virtually any town or village in the land, visualise a particular property-holding online and then click on it to find out who actually owns it. Currently about 85pc of property in the public is registered and this will show up on the system.

  • Italien: Gebäudekatastermeldungen online: Vorstellung in Bozen

Juni) in Bozen gesetzt.

  • Key milestone reached in formulation of UK geographic information strategy
