Transforming Government since 2001
The Department of Mines and Geology and the Karnataka Government are embarking on a project to establish a GIS-based geo-database system to help the online processing of mining applications.

According to the Department of Mines and Geology, the main objective of the project is to delineate the mineral belts on various potential zones in the state by adopting remote sensing techniques marking the free hold areas for the benefit of all stakeholders involved.

The system will help local authorities map mineralised zones, develop mineral atlas and access data on existing leases. The data derived will be made available in the department website so that industry stakeholders can use it to file online applications for mining lease.

Furthermore, as per the mandate of the Government of India, the Department is also embarking on establishing an online Mining Tenement Registry on a pilot basis in Bellary district. The project entails the digitisation of all village maps in the scale of 1:4,000 which will then be extended to Gulbarga district.

The data on mining lease application and lease will be incorporated on cadastral maps using GIS technology. In addition, a data centre and server will be established in Bangalore.
