  • Bahrain: Batelco steps into future with new deal

    BAHRAIN took a step into the future last night, with the signing of an agreement that will pave the way for electronic government

    Batelco and the government's Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) signed a memorandum of understanding, which defines Batelco's role in providing state-of-the-art communications technology.

  • Bahrain: BD22m earmarked for e-government

    Bahrain has allocated BD22 million to develop its eGovernment services over the next three years, it was revealed yesterday.

    The total number of services provided by eGovernment will increase from the current 28 to 167 by the end of 2009, said Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of the Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.

  • Bahrain: Bill Payments Made Easier

    The Public Works Department is expecting its revenue to increase and less complaints from customers regarding delays in receiving their water bills, with the introduction of a new billing system introduced recently.

    Tutong is the first district to implement the system which is part of the Ministry of Development's e-government projects. The advanced national e-Billing Integrated System (eBIS), aims to enhance the provision of metering and billing services to the public.

  • Bahrain: Blog spurs dialogue on key public services

    A total of 2,000 visits to the e-Government Blog were recorded during a one-hour public dialogue with Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa.

    Shaikh Ahmed interacted with the public regarding comments, suggestions and recommendations on issues related to e-government operations.

    This interaction follows the launch of the eGovernment Blog on the national portal bahrain.bh last week.

  • Bahrain: Board will set award guidelines

    The eGovernment Authority (EGA) announced yesterday the formation of the Bahrain eContent Award organising committee.

    It will be chaired by Ahmed Al Hujairi, former chairman of Bahrain Internet Society.

    Other members in the committee include EGA marketing and awareness director Isa Abdul Rahman, AbdulAziz Al Dossary, from EGA, Obaidli Al Obaidli, a private sector representative, Zuhair Al Baharna and Leena Alawi, from Industry and Commerce Ministry, and Nawaf Abdulrahman and Ahmad Al Balooshi, from the Bahrain Internet Society.

  • Bahrain: Bureaucracy shape-up!

    Bahrain's civil service is in for a major shake-up, to cut red-tape and improve efficiency. Better training and rewards for staff and more autonomy for individual ministries will help enhance performance.

    The Civil Service Bureau (CSB) is to be revamped, switching its role from supervisory to innovative, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatallah Al Khalifa said yesterday.

  • Bahrain: Call to bridge digital divide

    An expert yesterday called for more quality Internet content in languages other than English during a visit to Bahrain.

    United Nations (UN) World Summit Awards (WSA) board chairman and International Centre for New Media (ICNM) honorary president Peter Bruck said more should be done to bridge the digital divide.

    "Today, 90 per cent of the content on the Internet is in English, but English is not the mother tongue of most of the people on this planet," he said.

  • Bahrain: Cancer cases spark concern

    There were 417 recorded cancer patients in Bahrain last year, but the figures could be higher because not all sufferers were reported to the country's central cancer monitoring centre. Plans have now been drawn up to expand the Bahrain Cancer Registry and make it mandatory for all private hospitals to report all cancer patients they are treating.

    It is estimated that for every 10 cancer cases reported to the centre, one is not, said Health Ministry Medical Review Office head Dr Jamal Al Sayyad.

  • Bahrain: Centre offering IT support

    Bahrain is committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations and helping other nations through utilising information technology and the kingdom's experience in this field.

    "Bahrain is assisting other countries and governments to achieve these goals through launching the eNablers Centre, which will be a training and consultancy centre based in Bahrain that will assist various countries based on their needs and requirements, helping them achieve the MDGs," Bahrain eGovernment Authority chief executive officer Mohammed Al Qaed told delegates at the Bahrain World eEconomic Summit yesterday.

  • Bahrain: Centre to Exchange Expertise

    Bahrain has welcomed the decision of UN official to establish a Regional Centre for Exchange of Know How and Expertise in Technology and e-Government here.

    This was decided during a meeting held on Friday between Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Atiyatallah Al Khalifa with Director of Division for Public Administration and Development Management at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Haiyan Qian and Inter-Regional Advisor on e-Government division Richard Kirby.

  • Bahrain: CEO of the eGovt Authority to achieve Millennium Development Goals set by United Natiions

    The CEO of the eGovernment Authority Mr. Mohammed Al Qaed confirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations. He also added that they are currently working to achieve the goals through utilizing the ICT and Bahrain's experience in this field.

    "The Kingdom of Bahrain is assisting the other countries and governments to achieve these goals through launching the eNablers Center, which will be a training and consultancy center based in the Kingdom of Bahrain that will assist various countries based on their needs and requirements , helping them achieve the Millennium Development Goals," Al Qaed stated.

  • Bahrain: Charting a new path

    As a newly formed organisation, the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD) Bahrain has a mandate to be a pioneer in its field. In line with this mission, the IT department has been leading the road to innovation by investing in technology, particularly open source, to help it come into its own.

    After having recently separated from the Ministry of Labour, MOSD today has been tasked to deliver efficient services in the most cost effective manner as possible. And as a fledgling IT department, its Assistant under Secretary for IT, Human Resource and Finance, Maha Al-Mandeel has found that with the right technology, the IT department can do more with less.

  • Bahrain: CR renewal through post office

    Bahrain's business owners will be able to save on time and paperwork thanks to an agreement signed yesterday which will allow them to renew their commercial registrations (CRs) at branches of Bahrain Post Office.

    At a ceremony held at the Ministry for Post, Communications Frequencies and Transport Affairs in the Diplomatic Area, the department's Under-Secretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa and Commerce Ministry Under-Secretary Abdulla Mansoor signed an agreement aimed to make life easier for Bahrain's business community.

  • Bahrain: Driving licences via the Internet soon

    People in Bahrain will be able to renew their driving licences, register their cars or pay traffic fines via the Internet by the end of the year.

    They will also be able to register as unemployed or renew their Central Population Register (CPR) cards online.

    The five new electronic services will be the first phase of the expansion of e-government, to speed up public services, says Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Central Informatics Organisation president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa.

    ELECTRONIC watchdogs are to guard Bahrain's e-government network against computer viruses. The Central Informatics Organisation (CIO), which is responsible for regulating the Bahrain government's information technology (IT) systems, signed an agreement yesterday with Trend Micro, one of the world's leading Internet security providers.
  • Bahrain: E-economy Coming On Line

    Bahrain's information and communications technology sector is on the verge of a massive expansion, with flow on effects to ripple through the kingdom's entire economy as the government goes about changing the way it does business.

    In the middle of 2007, the government announced it would be transferring many state functions on line, and established the E-government Agency to coordinate the initiative.

  • Bahrain: E-government 'to be world class'

    Bahrain pledged yesterday to provide world-class e-government services to become the optimal preferred place for work, residence and tourism. Future plans include the granting of an e-mail account for all, free-of-charge, in association with Microsoft as well as more government services electronically and via mobile phones, a top government official said yesterday.

    "Through our e-government strategy, we have placed the roadmap and action plan of the government for a period of three years," said Deputy Prime Minister and Information and Communication Technology Supreme Committee chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.

    THE proposed electronic government will open up new job opportunities in Bahrain, a top official revealed.

    Technology can never replace the human element, but will help people to utilise their time much better, said Central Informatics Organisation Under-Secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatulla Al Khalifa.

  • Bahrain: E-government centre planned

    N e-government centre, the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, is to be established in Bahrain, it was revealed yesterday.

    The centre, designed to help governments across the GCC establish and roll out e-government projects, is being created jointly by the Central Informatics Organisation (CIO), IBM and Gulf Business Machines (GBM).

  • Bahrain: E-government in the spotlight

    Bahrain's e-government strategies came under the spotlight at a workshop at United Nations headquarters.

    A Bahraini strong delegation co-ordinated the two-day event with the UN officials in charge of the index scheme.

    Participants represented the ministries of the interior, education, social development, health, finance and labour.
