The Gulf states have in the past six years embraced the idea of using technology to make government departments run more efficiently. After decades of cumbersome state bureaucracy, the region’s governments have mounted a sustained effort to move as many services online as possible

In 2003, Dubai launched its e-government initiative, which has resulted in 2000 government services now being offered online.

ICT development remains an important component in the growth strategies of countries in the Middle East, as the region collectively delivered impressive results in the Network Readiness Index (NRI) of the Global Information Technology Report 2008-2009, which has been published by the World Economic Forum and Insead.

The report revealed that nearly all countries in the region made it within the top half of the NRI, showing a growing trend wherein countries are leveraging ICT to increase economic prospects and improve global competitiveness.

Concerted efforts to build unified knowledge platform and e-policy by all GCC countries

As part of the various activities that will accompany the Bahrain International eGovernment Forum 2009, and out of Bahrain's eGovernment Authority's (eGA) efforts to exchange views and knowhow with the countries of the region, the chiefs of eGovernment bodies and programs in the GCC will hold a special session to discuss and share the best eGovernment practices and experiences.

The Infoconnect Exhibition, which kicked off at the Kuwait Fairground on Sunday, has not only attracted the private sector but it has also drawn GCC e-governments as well. All official agencies of GCC e-governments are partaking in the exhibition, which will last until Feb 7, with a view to sharing expertise, offering up-to-date services to the public, and getting them acquainted with state-of-the-art technology, an official of the Kuwait Central Agency for Information Technology, Abdelatif al-Sariaa, told KUNA. GCC e-government agencies are to meet together on the sidelines of the exhibition in order to harness more communication and cooperation, he said.
