Concerted efforts to build unified knowledge platform and e-policy by all GCC countries

As part of the various activities that will accompany the Bahrain International eGovernment Forum 2009, and out of Bahrain's eGovernment Authority's (eGA) efforts to exchange views and knowhow with the countries of the region, the chiefs of eGovernment bodies and programs in the GCC will hold a special session to discuss and share the best eGovernment practices and experiences.

"The session is part of the EGA's effort to find a unified knowledge platform and electronic policy to be built collectively by all the GCC countries in particular and the Middle East countries in general," said Mr. Isa AbdulRahman, Vice Chairman of the Forum's organizing committee and eGA Director of Marketing and Awareness. "We seek to combine efforts and available resources to achieve this ambitious objective, which is expected to build a better future for all the countries of the region and enable them to compete internationally in this vital sector."

Two public panel discussions are scheduled to be held on the 26th and 27th of May within the activities of the Bahrain International eGovernment Forum 2009, which will be held at the Bahrain International Exhibition Center. A number of GCC eGovernment chiefs and representatives of international organizations and technology providers will participate in the debate.

The discussions will focus on the challenges and obstacles to the implementation of eGovernment programs, eGovernance, citizens' interaction with eGovernment plans, and the role of the private sector in supporting eGovernments. The participants will also discuss the experiences of the Gulf nations in the field of eGovernment and the future plans they intend to implement.

Mr. Isa AbdulRahman said arrangements have been completed to present the best and most successful local, regional, and international eGovernment practices, as well as the technological solutions that can be applied to achieve excellent implementation of eGovernment programs during the forum. More details about the programs of the forum are available on its website www.egovforum.bh.

The Bahrain International eGovernment Forum 2009 will be held for the second year running between 25 and 27 May 2009 under the patronage of HE Shaikh Mohamed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology (SCICT). It is organized by the eGovernment Authority in cooperation with the Bahrain Society of Engineers, the Bahrain Information Technology Society, and the Bahrain Internet Society.

In addition to the chiefs of eGovernment authorities, the forum is expected to be attended by an elite group of international eGovernment thought leaders and decision-makers, United Nations experts, ICT specialists in the public and government sectors, specialized technology societies, and representatives of industry and chambers of commerce.

About eGovernment Authority Bahrain

The eGovernment Authority (eGA) was established by Royal Decree 69 in August 2007. Reporting to the Cabinet, the eGA aims to coordinate and execute e-government initiatives in line with the strategies, plans, and programs set by the Supreme Council for Information Communication Technology (SCICT), headed by HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The eGA's role entails everything from proposing overall policies and appropriate legislations to the SCICT for approval to overseeing the execution of the approved SCICT programs. This includes suggesting required IT programs, facilitating communications and services between all government entities, opening new e-channels for e-government services, and offering technical and knowledge-based support to the ministries and other government entities.

Currently, the eGA is working on executing the plans contained within Bahrain's e-government strategy to achieve the ambitious Bahraini e-initiatives, as well as offering 200 basic governmental services electronically via various communication channels within 3 years to all citizens, residents, and businesses of Bahrain.
