BYND2015 Nepal Hub, in collaboration with Story Cycle, organized a storytelling program last Sunday at Mahabir’s Center for Nepal Connection in Thamel.

The program emphasized on the role that information and communication technologies (ICT) plays in bringing about development in a community.

During the presentation, Kabita Gautam, Founder/Coordinator of BYND2015 Nepal Hub shared, “As a part of crowd-sourcing ideas, BYND2015 Nepal Hub in collaboration with BTND2015-ITU is organizing different activities with the theme ‘ICT for Development and Future Generations.’

Digital Education

Some schools in Kathmandu have started implementing e-learning and smart classes, for which they have been getting acclaim. Blackboards became white boards, and in their place we now have digital/smart boards.

This is an evolution as well as revolution in the sector of teaching. The concept of e-learning has entered our society, and students have become e-kids. Our neighboring countries have already started using digital boards and ICT methodologies, but in Nepal most parents are unable to bear the expensive fees such facilities create.

Problems in Telemedicine

With Patan hospital as the hub, the government of Nepal has started telemedicine service in 25 Himalayan districts including Acchham, Sindhuli and Khotang. Without doubt, telemedicine will prove to be useful in increasing public’s access to health facilities. Lack of road connectivity and poor infrastructures in general, and lack of good hospitals and trained doctors in particular, will be addressed by telemedicine. However, with the example of Nangi clinic, this article will point out the problems that telemedicine might have to face in Nepal. I assume Nangi clinic in Ramche VDC of Myagdi is more or less representative of other clinics with telemedicine service in the hilly and mountainous districts of Nepal.

No further chance for Nov vote

With the expiry on Monday of the deadline set by the Election Commission (EC) for registering voters in the new electoral rolls with photos and biometrics, altogether 12.1 million voters across the country have been registered.

The number is 5.5 million lesser than the total number of voters registered for the 2008 Constituent Assembly (CA) election. Altogether 17.6 million voters were registered for the 2008 CA election.

Dial 1919 from a telephone in Sri Lanka and you can get information on 77 different government bodies in three major languages of the country—Sinhala, Tamil, and English. In Sri Lanka, a range of ICT facilities have been introduced to strengthen information management in governance, education, healthcare, industry, agriculture, fisheries, social security and judicial systems, especially at the grassroots level.

The institutional mechanisms of Sri Lanka have been altered for rapid development of society using ICT. Since 2005, the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) has provided leadership in the application of ICT. Its “e-Sri Lanka” program has achieved major economic, developmental, and social improvements.
