The two-day ICT conference, held on the sidelines of Midas CAN Info-Tech, concluded on Saturday, stressing on the need to increase the use of ICT to strengthen the democratic process in the country.

Around 100 participants, including experts from abroad, participated in panel discussion organized on the theme of e-Democracy.

With the objective of maximizing ICT use in government agencies that deal directly with the public, the Computer Association of Nepal and Internet Society Nepal Chapter had held the conference from Friday.

Speaking at a panel discussion on ´Citizens´ Involvement in Democratic Processes through ICT´, former lawmaker Gagan Thapa said ICT can strengthen the democratic process in any country.

Former minister Kalpana Dhamala said the science and technology ministry still does not fall in the priority list of the government.

"It is unfortunate that the government is still not being able to give top priority to ICT sector," Dhamala said.

Similarly, former minister Ganesh Shah stressed on the need to fully implement IT related policies.

"Although different commitments have been made over the years, we have not been able to fully implement them," he said.

Chief Secretary Lilamani Paudel, who chaired the first session of the program on Saturday, said the government has already started using IT tools to deepen good governance practices.

Tulasi Prasad Gautam, the executive director of National ID Management Center, said the home ministry has already initiated the process of providing unique ID number to digitize individual information.
