Six international firms have submitted their bid to bag the much touted national identity card project to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.

According to the National Identity Card Management Center of the ministry, evaluation process of these firms will begin from Thursday that will take at least one month to complete.

Unrestricted broadband internet access should be included as a fundamental right in the statute

After having missed the industrial revolution, Nepal is still struggling to move past the post-medieval age. And if the country is not careful, it is going the miss the digital revolution as well.

Vint Cerf, the father of the internet strongly believes that governments should make broadband a national priority because it is a powerful force for social change and socioeconomic development. Thus, if governments are serious about prosperity, policymakers should also prioritise broadband internet along with energy and transportation. And there is a good reason for this. The World Bank says that a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration increases a developed country’s GDP by 1.19 percent and that of a developing country by 1.35 percent.

Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) has expressed reservation about the government decision to begin biometric health screening for workers going to Malaysia. In a statement issued on Saturday, NAFEA urged the government to suspend biometric health screening, arguing that it was against the common good of migrant workers.

Biometric screening is a fingerprint scanning system with security features to match an individual’s identity with his/her data recorded in the passport.

If things go as per plan, broadband service will be available nationwide at a cheaper cost, including in rural areas within five years. All village development committees (VDCs) will have wired or wireless broadband connection by the end of 2020.

This is one of the targets set by the government in the National Broadband Policy. The policy, focused on broadband infrastructure development and increasing access to high-speed internet services, was endorsed by the Cabinet in April and Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) made it public recently.

The government is the biggest employer in the country. Along with politics, public administration is the only profession that provides access to money, power and prestige.
