This is already my third visit to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, in the past year. Rwanda itself is a relatively small country with few natural resources and poor economic ties with the outside world. As such, one could argue that there is little here to write about.

The country is ready to host the Transform Africa Summit 2013, a forum aimed at spearheading broadband connectivity across the continent, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, the Minister for Youth and ICT, said in a statement yesterday.

Residents of the City of Kigali will now have access to free wireless internet in specific areas under what has been dubbed the 'Smart Kigali' initiative that was launched on Friday. The designated areas where people will have access to wi-fi include public buses, King Faisal Hospital, Nyabugogo Taxi Park, and commercial buildings and restaurants within the city.

The initiative is a partnership between the City of Kigali, internet service providers and government agencies like Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency and Rwanda Development Board, as well as the Rwanda Hotel and Restaurant Association.
