The Kingdom is on course for switch over to e-governance, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Muhammad Jameel Mulla said yesterday. He was speaking at a press conference after inaugurating GITEX Saudi Arabia 2005 at the Riyadh Exhibition Center.

The five-day exhibition attracted 500 companies from 15 countries; there were more than 5,000 visitors on the first day with 80,000 being targeted.

Earlier this year, the general manager of Saudi Arabian Airline’s public relations department, Qahtan Balkhair, announced that the airline was to install an internet service system on one of the company’s 747-468 aircraft. The system is on a six-month trial and, should all go well, the internet and e-mail services will be installed on the majority of Saudi Airline’s aircraft and made available to passengers.

According to a government official plans for an e-government portal in Saudi Arabia are advanced, and an announcement will be made shortly.

Dr Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, has said that the e-government portal will include a transaction and billing engine to facilitate citizen payments to public agencies.

Various chambers of commerce across Saudi Arabia have been considering introducing the online document legalization system aimed at achieving greater efficiency and ease of interaction.

“Electronic document certification will surely go a long way in simplifying our procedures, making them more accessible and user-friendly than before,” an official at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce & Industry said yesterday. The move is also intended to ensure greater security of electronic signatures of members.

In a step toward e-government, Saudi chambers of commerce and industry will implement the new electronic authentication and attestation system next month, according to an official.

Dr. Fahd Al-Sultan, secretary-general of the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CSCCI), told Arab News that the new electronic system is undergoing a trial run for the last month within the three main chambers (Riyadh, Jeddah and Alkhobar) and will officially be implemented next month.
