The government has launched what it described as 'one of the most exciting e-government projects to date' -- an on-line motor tax service.

According to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, from 1 March 2004 it will be possible for Irish residents to renew their motor tax 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through a new Web site, www.motortax.ie.

The sophistication of e-government in Ireland has increased marginally since the end of 2002, but other EU countries are narrowing what was once a wide gap.

That's according to an annual report from Cap, Gemini, Ernst & Young (CGE&Y) for the European Commission Information Society Directorate-General, which placed Ireland second in Europe in terms of on-line public service sophistication, with a score 86 percent. That placement ties with Denmark and is 1 point behind the leader, Sweden. Last year Ireland had an 85 percent score and in October 2001 its score was 68 percent, topping the list.

The Irish Government is at last close to signing a contract for its main e-government system

Ireland is finally moving ahead with its central e-government infrastructure, known as the Public Services Broker, after lengthy delays in the project.

State payments to phantom patients and pensioners will cease with the implementation of a new computerised registration of deaths, Mary Coughlan Minister for Social and Family Affairs said today.

Minister Coughlan will introduce the Civil Registration Bill in the Dáil this week bringing significant changes to registration procedures for life events, such as births, deaths and marriages.

Multinational consultancy firm BearingPoint looks likely to win the contract to develop the Public Services Broker (PSB).
