Video game makers join forces with medical experts to design apps for improved well-being

Alan Price had a successful career in the video game industry as chief technology officer for EA Canada.

But a desire to create games that would do more than simply entertain, combined with a transformation in his industry that has seen video games shift from consoles to smartphones and social networks, prompted Price to join the burgeoning digital health sector where he's creating wellness apps for kids.

The Manitoba government has launched an online organ and tissue donor registry.

A new website (SignUpForLife.ca) will easily allow perspective donors to sign up and give their consent to have their organs donated when they pass on. Organs will be donated to those people requiring a transplant as the result of an injury or disease.

Doctors and other authorized health professionals can now use iPads and other mobile devices to access their patients’ health information at 28 hospitals across the Hamilton region and other parts of southern Ontario.

The expansion of access to records on devices such as iPhones “brings effective, fast, secure and safe decision-making ability right to the bedside at any time, day or night,” the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant (HNHB) Local Health Integration Network announced Friday.

The Ontario government has spent nine years and billions of dollars trying to make its troubled eHealth program work.

And despite repeated assurances from the government, that progress is being made, many doctors still struggle to get timely access to basic medical records and patients continue to face needless risks and treatment delays the program has failed to deliver what the public was promised - efficient access to electronic health records.

The Saskatchewan health system should save about $100 million during the next five years with a new organization focused on providing shared services for all 12 health regions, the cancer agency and affiliated organizations, its CEO says.

Shared Services Saskatchewan, which will be known as 3s Health, takes over a big chunk of the work formerly done by the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) and was approved by SAHO members this week.
