State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Tuesday said the proposed Digital Security law will be the elaborate version of the previously enacted Cyber Security law.

“With increased digital services, the crimes are not occurred only through online services, rather through digital devices. Therefore, we are planning an elaborate act to tackle all sorts of digital crimes”, the state minister told reporters at ICT division conference room in Agargaon.

In 2015, the government took several initiatives to materialise its dream of digital Bangladesh.

Online gateway to 25,000 government offices

At the beginning of 2015, a website has brought together 25,000 government offices through separate links, allowing people to access information or file complaints easily online. The website, National Web Portal of Bangladesh, is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The site, which works as a gateway to government portals, has more than 1.5 millions content items, including 40,000 photos of famous or historical places in the country.

The government has set up a computer incident response team (CIRT) at Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) to secure its online public service delivery platform network, official sources said.

They said the CIRT has been set up under a World Bank-funded Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project to protect its e-(electronic) government platform from the fast growing cyber attacks and cyber crimes.

State minister for posts and telecommunication Tarana Halim said "If we consider the SIM cards as commodity, tax has already been paid against those. So, NBR could impose transfer fee, but not any tax if those SIMs are activated earlier."

The state minister passed the remark against the backdrop of NBR's claim for tax and VAT on mobile connection during the ongoing biometric SIM registration to curb telephony crimes. All the cell phone users of Bangladesh have to verify their connection using the biometric system that began on December 16.

A senior executive of the Temasek Foundation told the FE that they have plans to help Bangladesh upgrade its technical and vocational education and ICT into new heights with financial and technical assistance.
