The Bangladeshi National Planning Commission will follow Sri Lanka's national 'e-governance' strategy as both countries have faced similar challenges in the field of e-government implementation.

“It is very clear that we can apply some of the key strategies already identified by Sri Lanka’s authorities in the e-government implementations,” S.A.S.M. Taifur, Project Director of the Bangladesh Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Task Force, told reporters just after the national conference on e-government at the SOFTEXPO 2005 in Dhaka.

Speakers at a brainstorming seminar Wednesday said the government should use open source technology in all its offices while trying to implement various e-government projects.

Mentioning that open source technology is very much suitable for introducing e-governance in poor countries like Bangladesh, they said the government needs to adopt a policy right now to procure open source software in implementing e-government projects considering the cost effectiveness of this technology.

The Sher-e-Bangla Nagar telephone exchange under the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board has been brought under e-governance.

The minister for posts and telecommunications, Aminul Haque, on Monday launched the e-governance application software developed by the Business Automation Limited.

The Business Automation also provided necessary hardware and network and trained concerned personnel for the project implemented with the technical and financial assistance of Support to ICT Task Force Programme, a government project to implement e-government in government offices.

Most government officials in Bangladesh are still unfamiliar with IT-based governance two years after the launch of the country's e-government programme.

According to a recent study presented at a meeting of the executive committee of National Taskforce on Information and Communication Technologies (NTICT), only 28 per cent of government administrators can operate a computer, despite US$13.6 million spent to date on the national e-government project since 2002.
