President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced plans to develop Alatau as a major hub for business and innovation, positioning it as a model for Kazakhstan’s technological future, Trend reports.
“In many rapidly developing countries, so-called cities of accelerated development have become poles of attraction for investment and technology. Our new center of business activity and innovation is to be the city of Alatau,” Tokayev said as he addressed the nation today.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the establishment of a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, underscoring Kazakhstan’s strategic goal of becoming a fully digital country within three years, at his annual state-of-the-nation address on Sept. 8 during a joint session of the parliament’s chambers.
Speaking on the nation’s future, Tokayev emphasized that Kazakhstan, located at the heart of Eurasia, must adapt to the global transformation driven by rapid digitalization and artificial intelligence. He noted that the new ministry will be created on the basis of the current specialized ministry and headed by a Deputy Prime Minister–level specialist, reported Akorda.

Astana is advancing its Smart City project to make the capital one of the safest and most technologically advanced cities in the region. The initiative involves an investment of 53 billion tenge (US$99 million) and introduces advanced artificial intelligence technologies to monitor traffic, enhance security, and integrate city services into a unified management system.
On Aug. 26, the Public Council of Astana held the platform titled Astana. Smart City Starts Today, gathering government officials, maslikhat deputies, IT experts, international partners, public figures, and residents. Surveys conducted through the Smart City application showed that 85% of residents prioritize child and school safety, 51% seek to reduce road accidents, and 91% support centralized AI-powered video surveillance.

In December 2025, Astana will launch the Smart City project, aimed at digitising urban infrastructure using artificial intelligence (AI).
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev praised the efforts of the government and the Astana city administration in preparing the project and instructed them to scale up the initiative to major cities across the country, including Almaty, Shymkent, and Karaganda.
The project provides for the automation of city services, optimisation of the transport system, improvement of energy efficiency, enhancement of security and environmental monitoring.
