Transforming Government since 2001

Sustainability has recently been a high-profile and important topic of discussion, with most businesses and governments asking the question: how can we reduce the impact that our operations are having on the planet? Increasingly, the answer lies in next-generation technologies, with the Internet of Things (IoT) at the forefront of driving this change.

What is IoT?

In short, the IoT is the network of connected objects that can collect and exchange data through sensors. This data is communicated in real-time to other devices or systems, over the Internet, creating self-regulating systems or giving us the tools required to control these vast networks of devices.

Huawei and United Development Company (UDC) signed an agreement to deploy Huawei smart campus system at another UDC development, Gewan Island. The agreement builds on a partnership UDC signed last year with Huawei to enhance The Pearl Island’s Smart City features. The deal would see Huawei design and integrate innovative solutions at the iconic development, including Wi-Fi networks, an intelligent command and control centre, and an advanced data centre facility.

The agreement was signed at Milipol Qatar 2022, the international homeland security and civil defence event from May 24 to 26 in Doha, where Huawei participated as the diamond sponsor. At its booth, Huawei showcased its leading cybersecurity and Smart City technologies, including a Smart City IOC (Intelligent operation centre), a centralised platform that offers a visualized panorama of the city, provides city running status, insights into city risks, and makes comprehensive decisions based on data and information. Visitors also experienced Huawei’s full-stack smart education solution, including intelligent connectivity as a foundation, a safe campus, a hybrid learning smart classroom, and data governance scenarios as online education accelerates post-COVID.

The government is keen on maintaining the acceleration of Qatar’s digital transformation, HE the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohamed bin Ali bin Mohamed al-Mannai said Wednesday at the opening ceremony of Smart City Expo Doha 2022, being held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani.

The two-day global forum organised by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in partnership with Fira de Barcelona, is being held at Msheireb Downtown Doha, which is hosting smart city experts from more than 60 countries. Some of the themes of recent Smart City Expo Doha 2022 were digital technology and its connection to smart, sustainable mobility. These themes recognise the link between the need to change mobility patterns, the power of digital technology, and sustainability goals. Qatar, for example, is targeting a 25% drop in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Such a goal is attainable if countries like Qatar use a comprehensive action framework that changes the management of mobility and the urban landscape. The next focus will be when Qatar hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup with over 1mn fans in attendance, which will use the country’s smart, sustainable mobility.

Qatar, like other Middle East countries, relies on private cars for most commuter transport. It helps that it is relatively inexpensive to own a car in the country thanks to affordable fuel, cheap licences, and friendly policies for private vehicles. The indirect cost is pollution, congestion, poor air quality, road crashes, and the resulting economic burden. The International Energy Agency, for example, estimates that transport is responsible for roughly 25% of all urban carbon dioxide emissions.
