The Second Lady, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur has called for the establishment of regional networks of digital libraries in Africa to accelerate the pace of research on the continent.

She said without any conscious effort to digitize the libraries and archives it would be difficult for the continent to harness its potential for accelerated development.

The Director General of National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Mr William Tevie, has said the new Eastern Corridor optical backbone network will offer a great number of direct socio-economic benefits to communities within the project’s catchment area.

He said the facility had no coverage limitation and could be tapped through any of the many technologies available.

Mr Tevie told newsmen in Ho that the project would attract new businesses, offer teaching and learning opportunities as well as telemedicine and new e-health services along towns on the Eastern Corridor.

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday inaugurated the Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic Backbone Infrastructure Project at Ho in the Volta Region.

The project, funded by the Government of Denmark at a cost of USD38 million, is designed and implemented by Alcatel-Lucen, a leader in the field of networking and communications technology, products and service. It has a data centre and a managed service component to ensure the security of data on the entire network.

The project spans 800km, linking Ghana's north and south as well as international submarine gateways via its eastern corridor. It serves major towns such as Ho, Kpando, Jasikan, Nkwanta, Bimbilla, Yendi, Tamale, Gushiegua and Bawku as well as 23 smaller communities. It will be linked to the existing network in other parts of the country and facilitate network access to 120 District and Municipal Assemblies and surrounding communities.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned an 800km Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic backbone which runs through 20 districts and over 120 towns and communities in Ghana.

The project, which was started in May 2013, has been completed as promised by the president under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication and the National Information Technology Agency.
